Help and advise on buying and using ipad

In three weeks I plan to buy an ipad at LA airport (lot cheaper than here) and use it in Canada. Can I do this?
Where will I need to get a sim card ? Will I need to pre purchase the card? Will the ipad be locked in to a network in the US ?

Aussie, I won't be much help. But I'll try. I think they have wi-fi in them, so as long as you are somewhere with free wi-fi you're good. If you want it in between those places , then you will have to get a data plan with a cellular carrier. The thing is with the cellular carriers, the standard plan for the U.S., won't cover Canada. When I went to New Foundland this spring, I switched my coverage to cover Canada for the 2 weeks I was going to be there so I wouldn't have the roaming charges.
As far as the sim card goes, I would think that it has it's own memory and a sim card wouldn't be a necessity .

I may have just shown my ignorance more than normal, because I don't have an I-pad. I have a smart phone, a Nook tablet and a laptop. I personally like the smaller laptop's just because of the keyboard and I'm not an Apple fan. JMO.

Doc, I think your right. My mother has a Ipad and she only uses the wi-fi with out the data plan from a cellular company. I  have verizon and on my plan I have the portable wi-fi hot spot that i will connect my laptop computer too from my cell phone which works real well.

I think doc is right as well.  But, the sim card isn't for storage it would be for the cell service for internet.  Unless Aussie means an SD card which is for storage.
