My daughters are 12 and 15 been in 4-H for the past 5-7 years showing lambs and hogs, well my oldest wants to go big now ,wanting to show a heifer, and breed it down the road, she's interested in the shorthorns,we live in Ohio so we're looking for breeders close because transportation[hauling] will be a issue as well price since I'm a single dad,so any help on pointing us in the right direction on where to find young heifers at reasonable pricing or payment plan will be appreciated thanks

I would check out all the online sales that are coming up and take a weekend and go see the ones you are interested in. Lots of good value out there if you are patient. Where are you located in Ohio? Go to Shorthorn website and check for breeders in your area. Have fun.

Go to the Sales, only to look and determine what you All like. Buy from a trusted Breeder of Show Heifers at his/her farm. Take their advice as to what calf they pick for you.

The above is purely advice from one in the same situation, many years ago. However, I was coaxed into buying a couple of bred Heifers, which ended up amazingly well.

Topdawg I am located in Clark County as well. Last year I started showing steers. I recommend for your first year going with someone here in the county. Adams Family Show Cattle is in Springfield and South Vienna but if you buy through them they will help you with any problems and they will fit your calf for you at the shows you go to. Im not sure if they have any shorthorns but they do have some really nice ones out there. They have 2 sales this fall and they sell some private treaty. I have bought calves 2 years in a row from them and will be going back next year.

Check out Ohio Beef Expo in March . Really a neat deal there. We are from Indiana and came over last year. It really highlights breeders and what they have . Its also a good chance to pick up a heifer calf that has been broke and worked already so some of the hard work is already done. Also a good chance to meet area breeders and make contact for future business .I wish Indiana had an event like this. Our Hoosier Beef Congress has turned into a steer jock deal and really doesn't do much to support the different breeders in our state. This will  also give you a chance to save up some money.

Have to agree with JTM. He always showed up with top shelf calves. Also look at RC show calves, sale coming up in the next couple days (both in Preble) and if you call Tyler Winegardner he may have something. I know he has a really awesome Swag Shorthorn Plus heifer, who's mother is a no miss.

This is a little different approach, but it may help you...I don't know.

We went to a Purebred producer in our area, and walked his heifer pen before his heifer sale. This was not a club calf deal, although the producer does raise a few and sells them off to traders. We told him which ones we liked, and told him that we wanted a heifer to show. We guaranteed him 3 prospect shows, a County Fair, and State Fair Open Class and 4-H. So 6 shows that we guaranteed we would pull her to.

We td him that we didn't have much money to spend, but didn't want to pull our show steers during the heat of summer while we were trying to grow hair.

This is what HE came up with. He put a floor on the heifer he felt was the best show prospect. He felt the advertising was worth a lot of money to him. She ran through the sale, didn't hit his number (whatever it was ??), we picked her up, paid the feed bill and all expenses from showing her, and we paid nothing for the heifer. She will sell as a bred heifer on his sale this year, with a successful show ring record, and the kids get half of what she brings.

Now their hard work has earned them some money to put with this same deal next year.

He said its way cheaper for him to do this than mess around showing himself or paying to put her in a show string somewhere.

Who knows...it may be worth trying.
