Yes, even though I am a Simmgal I do have some Herefords that I A.I. to try and get show calves out of! I have been looking at some bulls to try and add some belly and butt to my hereford cows. I am not as familiar with herefords as I am with Simmis, so I need a little help! Which of these bulls would you recommend for getting a showy hereford calf? Has anyone seen calves out of any of these? Thanks!  (thumbsup)

I already have Purple Currency, Bogart, Hard Drive and my cows are currently bred to P606. Any of these stand out?

H/T Crossfire.. hands down, IMB..\

I plan to buy a Herf this year--- and he'll be my lead AI bull...

This guy? http://www.cattlevisions.com/Hereford/HT_Crossfire.php I'm guessing he's had some pretty good calves for you to be recommending him!  ;D

The last Hereford bull we had tore thorugh the fence, had crappy calves and was just a general pain in the butt... So now the only male Herefords that live in my barn are stored in my semen tank! Where are you thinking about purchasing one from?

yes that is him.. had a southerner point me towards him...  Big believer- I like the way that bull looks- like what I've seen from the Summit cattle-- and have thought about using Crossfire's sire for a couple years on some black cows...  I just have that feeling about this one..

Who purchase from_ depends who has one cheap, and better than average..  have an idea of a old SP'er in northern IN- and have a friend who's a herf deluxe sending me to some people in N IL>

How is Currency for frame? I had a friend tell me that he throws tall calves. One of my cows is a bit tall and could use some moderation.

Would that bull make better females or steers? I try to show the females more than the males, and if anything ,the bulls are shown cow/calf. I don't do the steer deal...If you couldn't already tell!  ;)

Good luck trying to find a bull! Is he one you would breed your dairy animals to, or your beef ones? I thought you had mentioned something about looking for a red bull to breed to your dairy heifers. I had a good 1/4 holstein 1/4 simmental and 1/2 Hereford cross that has some awesome calves..she's not very pretty though, but shes a worker.

Your p606 and Bogart lines will give you some good thickness with a high maternal and milk line bull choices depend on what you plan on doing with the calves does it matter to you about horns or polled if this doesn't matter you have alot more to chose from go to the hereford web site and look these bulls up and see what breeders are using just because they are in a semen catalog does not make them any good  Let us know what your wanting to do with calves

He is in the pen with my carpe diem out of our vortec cow. 50 days ago the carpe diem was 25 pounds hevier the currency out weighs him by 30 pounds now. Growth has been amazing. As for him being tall. Not so much but his mother isnt a monst stall cow shes a purebred hereford too.

I have either used or are going to use most of the bulls on your list. So I have done my homework on them from what I have found out.

Thor- Great muscle. real stout. a bit short fronted. I have seen no daughters out of him in production yet. (I'm sure there are some tho)
Durango- Very deep bodied. Good to breed to first calf heifers. May throw a little more white.. I have found they are either really good or average. No tweeners.

Currency- Very good bull. We showed a heifer out of him last summer that had a ton of growth and bred back to calve at 20 months. UNBELIEVEABLE hair.
Hard Drive- Only got 1 heifer out of him. We have a steer we will show this summer tho. a little frammy, but good muscle. I would question thier milk but I have only seen a hand full. Also the ones I have had are a little "ranchy".
p606- Very good. Makes great cows. Where I work, they have a really nice one. Some I have seen have a little more white on them than I would expect. I might not put him real high on the showring produceing list but definatly makes good cows.

A couple of other bulls you may want to try are : Purple Womanizer- Very stout, huge bellied. Maybe not the soundest but makes killer steers and good heifers.
Crane Circle D Slugger- New bull for 2012. A very moderate, stout inexpensive bull. I think he is right for the times.  I know we are using him.

As for the other bulls on your list.. If you want Tundra influenced cattle I personally would use Wyarno over that tundra son you had listed. I think he will have a much bigger impact down the road.

These are just my observations through the years, I am by no means an expert.

Not purebred but this bull intrigues me a bunch.  Young and unproven but combines 2 proven lines.  The C17 cow is a good one.  Maternal as they get and has produced a bunch of good ones including Whiplash, backlash, Radar, Aftershock.... and the list goes on.  The bull is out of Summit 8103 so it is hard to think that he will be anything but good.  I am going to try him on some red cows this spring.

Prob steers-- but I'd think he'd change a bunch of average Herf cows for the better--  I'd use him for both- IMO.  I've seen quite a few slab sided worthless Herf cows over the years.

I don't want a herf bull-- I want a Herf heifer/ cow...  But yest, I'd breed our RA/ MS cross heifers to a herf bull-- the red ones anyways

As stated earlier, I am looking for showy type calves. I bred to P606 this year to get some good females as a base. I would like to have polled animals, but if there is a good horned bull I would be willing to try. I have talked to some breeders and went to Star Lake Ranch a few years ago and purchased my Bogart semen there after looking at their bull line up and calves. I only buy semen on a Hereford Bull if I have heard good reports and have seen good calves due to the fact that I have a limited hereford population to experiment with. This also means that I do my homework on each bull very carefully before I buy, and that's why im trying to find some opinions form breeders on here.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, everyone! More are welcome! (thumbsup)

obviously with the Sim as well..

I think you might be in a similar boat as I sometimes.. In that I get to anayzing this way too much- and trying to read and research to the point of overdoing it.  From time to time, I think I need to sit back and KISS  Go with instinct instead of other's opinions.

Thanks Jody! Haha..I do tend to over analyze... My cattle are important to me, so therefore I spend close to too much time trying to figure out what to breed them to.  <deadhorse>

my boss tells me that they are so important b/c my livilhood depends on the right decision.  B/c I have so much invested in them.. if I had the finances to spare-- breeding decisions would be minor.. I agree...  My entire paycheck goes to basically pay feed bills.

Well put. Plus, I have such a small herd of purebreds (6 Herefords and about 20 Simmentals) that if I make a mistake, it seriously impacts my herd. When I had to cull some crazy heifers, I lost about 50% of my fall replacement crop. It doesn't matter as much for my crossbreds because I have around 30, and I sell the majority of their calves at the stock sales. I show the majority of my purebre dheifers if they look good enough and have the right temperment.

I know this is not a bull that is on your list, but I have had extremely good success with Golden Oaks Outcross 18U. My cow base is Mark Donald so I don't know that he would niche with your cows the way he did mine. I have yet to see what I would call a bad calf out of him and even what I would call the tail end of them where much better than either the Currency or Millsap calves that I have had or have seen, that is my experience I think both bulls are very good individuals. Outcross gave me both plenty of muscle and guts in my calves, and they performed very well, and the heifers are amazing.

I also have had very good luck with both Yankee and Harland, the Yankee calves were maybe not as stout as I would have liked, but good cattle and the Harland's have done very well and seem to be very complete. I used both Currency and Millsap last year with much anticipation and they have done okay, they have not performed as well as I would have liked. I have some semen left on both, it will stay in my tank this year and I will go back to Outcross. There are a couple of other bulls in the breed that could work very well and I intend on going to see them over the next month before I decide to make any semen purchases on them.
