What's the best way to straighten out that wave that commonly comes with herefords' hair? I have been brushing out some of the show calves daily and the only spots that still have a wavy pattern is across the top. Any thoughts or ideas as to how to straighten it out? Thanks

I always comb waves and curls strait down then forward. Just keep working at it. They will come around eventually.

Brush it straight down and then slowly brush it forward. Also do this when blowing. This will help alot.

The best way I've found is when you get done rinsing, get a blower on them IMMEDIATELY!!!  Don't leave their hair wet very long or it will only make the kinks and curls that are there worse.  And when you think they are dry, keep blowing.  I haven't dealt with herefords much before we bought a herf steer this year and learned quickly that a blower is your best friend to keep the hair straight.  Another trick a guy told me to try is using fabric softener like conditioner.  Take a capful and put it in a bucket, fill with water, and pour on the calf and brush it in.  I haven't had to try it yet, but been told it works.  Good luck!

Rinse them as often as you can (at least once a day if possible). After rinsing, take a rice brush and brush the entire body, legs, belly, everything STRAIGHT DOWN (this gets rid of curls and waves and a ton of water). Then comb everything FORWARD, then comb everything up at the angle you want it (usually easier with a skip tooth comb if they are real hairy). Following the brushing and combing, blow from front to back, forward at the approprate angle (usually about 45ish). Everytime you see a curl, re-brush it straight down again, re-comb it and continue. DON'T LET THE CURLS DRY INTO THE HAIR! A light oil like Luster's Pink Sheen Spray will help relax the waves and condition the hair & hide. I haven't had any luck with Wave Tamer before. As repetitive as this routine is, it really works. Once the hair is trained to grow and lay at the angle you want, it'll take a lot less time and you can skip the combing forward step and just brush down, then comb the way you want. Works on even the curliest haired Herefords! Good luck!!

We have been showing Herefords  a long time, there are three things to conquer Hereford hair.

1- Mane n Tail. After a wash or rinse put MnT and warm water (1/3-2/3) into a squirt bottle. Squeegee them, spray all over, comb, respray, comb, blow

2- elbow grease. Work that hair. Lots like to go down, down and forward then forward. This works great but after the first couple weeks start to go straight forward, switch from a rice root to the more massaging type wash brush with wider teeth sets ( I like Weavers). Give the hair a brush and get the blower on it working forward. Even when it is dry keep brushing and blowing forward!

3- Lusters Pink/ Weaver Pro Pink. This is magic, don't be afraid to use lots and keep brushing and blowing. Add lots because if it gets to heavy it will just blow right out.

Waves and curl es will start to come out and become longer and longer. Once you feel you have the hair working very lightly nip off the ends of those left over curls or waves with your clippers to lay them in. Don't take too much, just nip them and you have straight hair. On legs we have used a roto brush and lots of pink to keep condition and tame them a bit and a sock to hold the tail.

Love my Herefords but the hair can be a challenge. USE LOTS OF PINK AND THE BLOWER!!!

Another trick I have tried when drying is to blow the hair backward and/or straight up first and then blow or comb forward.  It helps some.  You have to continue to experiment depending  on the direction of the wave.  All I know it is challenging and time consuming.  Totally agree with all the hints people have posted.  Humidity and leaving hair damp is no friend to curly/wavy hereford hair.

I would also suggest doing a search on here for Hereford Hair.  It hasn't been that long ago there were several posts with suggestions.

We do just like everyone else has suggested but when we get them completely dry we blow in a mix of kleen sheen and sullivans hair liniment seems to help

Shaving cream. Apply to curls brush down forward and keep brushing forward then blow dry and repeat. Usually after two or three times of doing this you will see a difference.
