high protine haylage

The last time we cut our alfalfa this year it was late and they were calling for rain so we had it bailed in bags for haylage.We have fed this to cows over the winter with great results as it is 26 to 28% protine. My question is has any one fed this type of hay to show calves that are on 16% show feed? Will this type of alfalfa help with expansion?

It's just my opinion, but I see no advantage to feeding more protein to your calves if their ration already has 16% protein. IMO the haylage is too high % moisture also. Your calves will get full of ( water) B4 they can take in the max. carbs. They really don't need that good of quality hay. A good grass hay would work better for them IMO. Save the protein for your cows, but sometimes on a cold winter day a grass hay mix will provide more(heat) for your cows than the strait haylage also.
