Hilltop & Olson Shorthorns Pics of SULL Jane Mary Heifer

Here are 3 pics of the heifer we bought.  The first is shortly after the NO Bull Sale the second is from the VA Beef Expo in April and the last two our from the past two days. 
Olson- How does she compare to your heifer??? What are you going to breed yours too? Whats the frame size like on your heifer?


Judge said she was wasty in her brisket and very square made, aslo think he mentioned something about the stifle.  She was 4th out of five in her class.
I'm afraid she is going to get over conditioned and we are going to run into breeding problems as well as get docked for it in the summer fairs.  Her hair has went down hill since getting out here to our warmer temps and she will not lay infront of fans on her own will, prefers the covered awning over two turbo fans and sawdust.
She is getting a 4 quart scoope of 14% feed and 2 qurst of beet pulp, still getting pones and brisket fat.
I am going to set her up for AI pretty soon.  I have some Money Man semen for a horn plus calf and we have a blue roan Money Man son here on the farm to clean up with or a pure herford out of the Palliadin 115N bull that was champion at Denver.  Don't really have an shorthorn semen for heifers but was thinking proud jazz might make a whale of a calf out of this heifer hopefully with a low birthweight to start.

I didn't think she looked too wastey in her brisket from the pictures--or I guess I've seen a lot worse. I think I'd like to see her carry herself a little stronger through her top but overall a nice heifer in my opinion. The old saying--that judges opinion on that day--but ultimately do you want her in your herd, if yes then your a winner right? I'd think about trying a pre-mixed holding feed, that way she's getting everything she needs but not a lot of weight gain. Show Chow says that their holding feed averages about a 1lb. per day gain...and lots of hay.

Although my cattle (whut few are left) live in Kansas-I live up the road from you-and being from Va can tell you most of the Judges I have seen dont know S^&**(t from shinola about a shorthorn,or anything other than the crooked legged no butt Angus back here. She isnt at all wasty in her brisquit-particularly how deep bodied she is-a blue Money Man or Mercedes Benz oughta work good, I have DMCC Bodybuilder at Berryville-works great-and super calving ease O0

Ryan Habeger was the judge up at that ABC Summer Bonanza this weekend in Maryland.  I thought he would be into a clubby type shorthorn heife rbut the one that won our class was huge in my opinion.  It was a nice heifer and I figured it would win the class.  Another heifer like her followed and then two smaller stouter heifers were third and 4th.  I saw it was a class of pairs in the make up area, our the pair we were in just ended up getting placed after the others.

From what I see she has adequate top and is very deep bodied!!
I can definately live with her front end as it is hard to get enough behind the shoulders without a little in front. Hard to tell from the pic but I don't think she is carrying too much condition.Does she have enough lower rear quarter for you???
I still really like her so if you want to send her north let me know LOL!!!
Hope you breed her Shorthorn. Here is a pic of our son of Saskvalley Pioneer that is bred and raised by my daughter with her first purebred. We may of bred her to him if we had her. He may be the bull we use to take over for our ol boy here.

I think she is lacing a bit in the rear for my liking.  I really like the freaky type clubby heifers though.  I was hoping we would be able to compete with her out here but it looks like we will still have a hard time winning unless she grows up.  That is one heck of a nice bull.  Talk about a rear on shorthorn bull.  You should be very pleased with him.  We have such a poor market for purebred shorthorn out here that I really think crossing will do me better.  We can't get anyone to travel out our way to get some calves sold.  Here the shows don't pay much more than a $1.25 for fat steers so our steer market is dirt cheap.  Can't spend more than about $800 and make some money.  We go for broke but not everyone is that serious here.  I think that bull would had worked out preyty good on this heifer.  I know Justin Olson has a full sib and I wanted to see what he was doing with her in the ring and also for breeding.

Mine has a LOT more  O0  O0  O0.

My Jane isn't real tall either, but super stout and sound, always one of the deeper heifers whenever we take her out. I was 3rd at our State preview this last weekend and could have been first if there had been something to follow her in class. Just way different than most heifers around here. 

I'm breeding her to TM Gus for her first calf, and then we'll see. Linebreeding the Sonny with Red Diamond worked great this year, maybe linebreed the Ace High a little bit? Calf won't get real tall, but I bet it would be one of the coolest ones around.

I saw your heifer at ABC. If i were you, id turn her out for a while. Let her stretch out those legs, and then try and bring her back in this fall a and grow some hair on her. Get her hooves trimmed regularly. If i were you, i would breed her to an angus bull for her first go around. She is definately lacking some size to have a big calf, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck.

her head looks oddly big in the last pic makes me question her frame size(little small?)
3rd picture makes her look quite conditioned... overall she looks pretty good in my book, im not a shorthorn fan by any stretch of the imagination but i do like deep body cattle with a good front and she seems to fit that bill IMO

I was ABC too! I was mainly in the barns the whole time so I didn't get to see many of the calves. I did get to see your heifer in the ready ring (I showed a Mianetainer heifer) and thought she looked pretty good. She should make you a good cow.

Do you know who was top 5 in the steer show? We left as soon as my brother's classes were over. It was way too hot to sit around and wait for overall results.

We didn't stay much more than about 20 minutes after we got out of the ring.  We did everyhting right at the trailer and when we were done we sprayed on the hocus pocus and brushed and blew her out.  Loaded up and were getting out of their.  We live about an our south of you on 81.
