I have a steer that I am worried is going to finish too soon for my achievement day. Never had this problem before.
Can anyone advise me on the best way to slow him down and hold him and yet still keep him in show ready for my earlier shows?
I know the big steer jockeys do it they just wont share thier secrets all they want to do is sell me one of thiers .
Thanks

Well it depends I guess where you are now with your steer, and what your target it.  Type of steer, frame type, and what your feeding now?  We started raising club calves this year.  I showed as a kid but boy has it changed.  We have had to learn as we go and with the help of a handful of really nice folks on here, our son actually has 2 pretty good steers getting one ready now for Ft Worth in about 10 days.  Just got back from one of the top 5 shows in TX and got Grand Champ  with his Chi Heifer.  Did pretty well also at our County show and it's one of the toughest in the State (Texas) for its size.  So, not so bad so far...

Feeding is really tricky, but if you'll pm me some notes on my questions above I'll try and answer best I can.  You should be able to pull up some old posts on feeding also.
There are several ways to hold one, but the main thing is the timing and when you need him to be finished.  If you bought one from a steer jockey and he isn't willing to help you with feeding questions, you need to find you a NEW steer jockey!!  Or buy from a breeder.  We'll have a handful of nice bull calves and heifers for sale later this spring.
Good Luck!
