Just wondering if anyone could provide a list of Homozygous Polled Shorthorn AI sires, or at least some that you know are. Thanks.

Here are a few that we have semen available on that are homozygous polled

2)Shady Lane Rockstar 9X- 2011 Agribition Champion
2) Hillside Leader- calving ease, calves with style and muscling
3) Saskvalley Pioneer 126P - structural soundness, thickness, improved testicles  and good udders
4) HC Timeline 17T ET ( only available in Canada)- explosive growth and style
5) Ready Go- calving ease. Maternal

The breed isn't anywhere close to the point of being able to single trait select.  Far more economical traits need improved on before we start focusing on whether they're horned or polled.  Selection based on color or horn status needs to be reserved until after we've mastered the economical traits.

I would agree with you in general, and that goes for any breed, but do not agree with you in specific cases. In this case I looking for a homo bull to use over some horned cows as horned bulls of any breed are much harder to market in Canada, and horned females beget more of those horned bulls.

Just looking at the list that Grant gave there are some good choices, and I am sure there are many more out there. Muridale Buster 14K and Northern Legend 3N are also noted as homozygous polled. In fact the Shorthorn breed polled population would contain more than 25% homozygous polled animals, and in that population there would be many bulls that could do the breed and or breeding program some good.

If colour and horns are discounted are they not economic traits. We are already limited on the age we can dehorn at some stage it will probably become a vet only practice how everything is going with added cost.

We just sent in Studers Trendsetter 31T and JDMC Saskvalley Remedy 34S in to use in a new DNA test they are trying to validate for horned and polled for the Shorthorn breed.  Both bulls have been mated to enough to horned cattle without siring horned calves, that they should be homozygous polled.

I agree that at some point, dehorning will only be allowed with some sort anesthesia.  Might be 10 years off, but it is likely on its way.
