Any opinions on the steer in the picture would be appreciated.  It isn't a very good picture though since it is a couple months old and taken in the middle of a hot month with little rain.  He is know a lot hairier and more filled in.  He is a Hot Spot steer out of a clubby dam, I can't remember exactly what it was but it had Angus and Maine along with something else.

To be honest, he may be a good fat market animal but he is not a show steer. Too big of front, smaller footed, and kind of has a big head to him. He isnt a showy, attention grabbing steer. Hope this helps, and you did say to be honest.

I disagree with Krush, I think you will get along just fine with this calf.  He isn't a big time steer, but he is complete honest calf with no real holes in him.  Can't tell how thick he is in the picture but it appears that he has enough muscle.  He looks like an easy doer.

Pros: I think he looks good. He looks heavy muscled and he has nice, thick legs, and a lot of body length. If he has a wide hindquarter to go with his hind legs, then I'd show him for sure.
Cons: His tailhead is kind of high, I've had a heifer lose a championship for that reason so I thought I'd point it out. If his neck was a little longer, I think it could help his overall look - when you train him, make him hold his head up high when you lead him and could hind this a little.

If he was mine, then I'd show him. Good luck with him.  ;)

he looks like a nice steer. watch the neck & shoulder so he doesn't get to thick or big. I'd like to see a rear shot if possible.

I think he is a pretty darn nice steer prospect. Looks good to me.
I like that the swirl on his forehead is above the eyes. He probably will not be one of those crazy-goofy type calves.

Thanks for your opinions.  This picture was taken at the end July so he does look a look a lot different now.  He is a lot hairier and it helps him look more showy.  Part of why his tailhead is high is because he is holding his tail away from his butt.  His shoulders are a little bigger than i would like.  I won't be able to get any more pictures until the end of the month so I can't get you a butt shot.  He is really wide though.

kinda "cuteheaded", muzzle kinda short, little straight in the back legs, pasterns puffy, but could just  be the hair.  i had a steer in college kinda like that and i stretched him all the time to free him up, found knots and massaged him real good.  kinda tight barreled, use his hair to deemphasise that and his shoulder point might be deemphasized if he's bulked out enough.

I like this calf. I think he looks like an easy feeder. I have seen some pretty poor looking wet "show steers". I wouldn't count him out. I think he has potential. Definitely try to have him hairy and it will help balance the overral apprearance. I actually like his head. s a nice shape to his head again contributing to his easy feeding. Good luck. Keep us up to date on his progress. more pictures when you can.

Good calf.  Only time will tell.  I would like a little longer neck and deeper flank, but he is young and if the genes are right, he could be too...  Good luck.

I am partial to Hot Spot....my daughter showed a Hot Spot.  He is pictured at the 2007 Ohio Beef Expo and was Champion AOB steer in the BEST program and our county fair Champ...The only thing that I can say about hot spot is that they come on with age...just keep feeding and working him and I think you will be okay.....plus one county over friend's of ours, their daughter had 2 Hot Spot steers, their 2 and ours were very similar...and their daughter got Grand and Reserve steer at their county....so just keep working.  Char

i think his short muzzle is more noticable because of his nice length.....but noticable none the less....but .i like him......i think the "something else" may be a  bit of simmi..??
either way knabe is right on....the hair will "cover" alot of the harder areas...good luck  jbarl

The guy that i bought him from does have some simmi influenced cows so that is probably what it was.

I think he's definitly worth feeding out. He's not as pretty through neck/shoulders/front end and I'd like a little more heart girth on him. He does go a bit high in the flank, but that may drop with time and feed. It looks as if he has a strong top and a good amount of muscle shape down from his hindquarter. Like another said, if he's got some width to him (which I presume he does) he should do fairly well. A rear shot would be nice. His tail set is a little high, but I'd be more concerned with that on a heifer than a steer. Have fun with him, I think he'll work.
