Jim Gupton.  For those of you around the country that do not know man Let me introduce him to y'all.  He owns and operates Gupton Cattle services out of Bowie Texas.  He trims hooves on show animals.
Please do not use this man to trim your show cattle's feet.  He killed my youngest son's show steer a couple of years.  This man operates his business with no insurance and no way to cover himself if there is a tragic problem like killing a steer on his table.
This man promissed us for 2 years he was going to cover our loss, He has failed to do this.
Do Not use this man. He is very very dangerous and a liar.  Do Not use him
If you want specifics please send me a message I will be more than  happy to share with you.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm 39 and Jim has trimmed every calf i've had or been associated with since I was 14.  We've never had an accident on his table.  I'm not sure any trimmer would bother to be in business for $40 foot trims if they were liable for the purchase price of every calf on that table

I too have been around Gupton for as long as you have, and seen his good and BAD side.  This is not about his Job He did or can do or has done it is about what he didnt do when he said he was going to make it "right" like he said he was going to do. Good luck

Gupton only trimmed one of mine i guess you could technically say two the first and last. I was very disappointed with his attitude and ethics towards my cattle this was several years ago but i know gupton is gettting up in age. Matt Leopold is the only person i will ever recommend or use for trimming my or my customers hooves. He is around the taylor area in central texas but will travel, my dad and I always put a group of calves together and matt would come to us! I believe he is still at $30 maybe $40 but last i talked to him it was $30. Great guy and great service his number is 512-595-1261. Tell him Kevin Doonan sent you and your sure to get a good deal  (thumbsup) just kidding but seriously he is the best hoof guy I know of or have been around.

I'll grant He isn't exactly the cow whisperer when one is giving him a hard time.  But he's been real good to us for a long time and I just felt the need to stand up for him a little.  But I can understand folks liking some of the younger guys better.

Does anyone know if any of the bigger trimmers carry insurance or not?  I would be surprised if they did.

It is a crushing loss anytime loses a show calf regardless of the reason.  We had two different incidents years ago where we had barn fulls of calves whiped out by bad corn from a pretty popular Texas feed maker.  They never compensated us, and they had a lot more resources to do so than any foot trimmer.  I've heard several stories of calves dying in the hands of jocks and being left up the creek.

Chambero I completely understand where you are coming from and respect what you are saying and displaying its kinda like target vs. walmart  ;) if he is still working for y'all use him! I still hang out with him around the stalls and such just have a guy that is closer to us and in my opinion spent more time on correction then actual trimming. And about the feed I believe it was the year my senior year  had 2 do the same thing off of feed and no compensation i doubt anybody outside of a veterinary clinic has insurance. I also see where JW is coming from if he extended the notion to "make it right" and didn't instead of extending condolences. I hope all is going well and to see y'all at the Buckle!

I second the Matt leopold motion!! He is a great guy! He helped correct a heifer that was having some foot issues when she walked on concrete. Over two trips the problem was solved, and she walked like a dream!

I too have had feet corrected by Guptom, I have also had calves with sore feet for a longer period of time than they should have as well, the straw for me was him killing the steer because of his attitude and negligence and yes was there helping him as he went along, when I said the neck strap was too tight he said let him hang there it teach him a lesson.  it was the last steer to be trimmed that day, I don't think he could have gotten out of the barn any faster if he had tried,  saying almost like Santa clause stream through the night "I'll make it right bud" I'll make it right!! he lied and has not done anything to "Make tit right" in the two years. So I am posting this with intention of bring awareness of his attitude toward animals and people in general.
Use him at your own risk and animals peril

Can you be more specific when you say ''He Killed'' you steer?  I can see how accidents could happen on a hoof trimming table and an explaination may prevent some of us from having such an unfortunate accident ourselfs...Thanks

Yes I can elaborate, the steer was 2 weeks from show 1200 lbs. full body stout. he would not go into shoot the way Gupton wanted, he kept putting his foot on a block on the side of his table. Gupton would take the show stick and rake it between the hoof toes to keep it off block the steer would pull out and away, Gup was getting frustrated, I wanted to wait and back it out, He being Gup finnally got the foot right and tightened the neck strap down extra tight, tighter than usall, When we were finished with the feet, just the frount two, we tilted the animal down. because the neck strap being so tight the calf could not get his feet under him, I wanted him to tilt it back up. Mr guptom said let the stupid * * * * hang there teach it a leasson..  I personally was not able to loosen the strap because of the all the weight of the calf was on it, he hung himself,  Gupton said it was his heart it blew up, I sent the heart in and had it tested, it was fine, no trauma to tissue.  It struggled hard enough to rupture his wind pipe.  This was the direct action of Mr. Gupton, and his carelessness.  Him wanting to get on to the next stop.  I have come to my wits end with Mr. Gupton trying to make it right. I was not asking for the moon and stars, the what if's if this calf had won.  I was asking for ligitamate expences incured by the loss of the calf.  HE has never attempted  Make it right!! I guess by ignoring me and his actions his making it right means It will just go away.
accidents do happen, but if they are preventable because this is what you do for a living, is it an accendent?
