Anyone cross shorthorns and horned Herefords on here? I use to want nothing to do with herefords but after researching them on cattle today and seeing some awesome cattle, I feel they have their rightful place as well.

We crossed a horned hereford bull on a  Heat Wave cow and got the coolest bald faced heifer calf.  She is a keeper and did it again this year.  Can't wait to show this one.  We took a chance when other people laughed.  I wonder what they will say when they see her??
Our other odd cross was a Red Angus on an Alias cow(1/2 black angus).  First timer and heifer calf is  black and is another keeper.  Outcrosses need to be introduced to keep the genetics healthyy

I bet a shorthorn and a herf would marry up pretty well and you sure can't beat the herfords temperment.

I know there is a Hereford ranch in Illinois that uses a lot of shorthorn bulls for clean up on his fall calving herd. The ones he had turned out hereford looking exactly.

We have both horned and polled cows at our farm. We have noticed the polled ones are a little frailer boned but have a lot better hair. The only thing with the Horned cattle you have to be careful of is they tend to get a little heavier fronted.

I've had the pleasure of clipping at Adams Hirsche's on a few occasions for their fall sale as well as the spring sale in Oklahoma. The horned cattle are by far superior to the polled anyday of the week. We'd clip 100 bull calves, that were very green broke, tied to gates in their sale barn.
One of my good friends and clients bought into GH Col Patton. He was a polled breeder and could see the polled cattle going downhill fast and wanted to change this. That bull turned his herd around.
One of the gentlemen that JIT listed in another thread, a former Shorty breeder, along with his sons, had one of the most successful and powerful polled hereford herds in North America, probably the world. You can trace almost all of his pedigrees back no further than 3 to 4 generations and to find a horned bull.
