About time.  Now, if we could just run all of the federal government's former "wild" (feral) horses in holding facilities through we could solve several problems at once.

The first thing the Obama administration has done right.  Lets just hope they get them up and running and we can get some horses through before PETA strikes again.  They never actually got what they wanted the first time.  There was never actually a bill passed banning horse slaughter, they simply cut funding to pay the USDA inspectors in the horse slaughter plants which meant the plants couldnt operate.  The briliant congresswoman from Wyoming got it reinstated so as soon as they get some inspectors they can begin operating again.  I think that woman should run for President.

As a horse person too, it is great to see it open back up! Since they shut em down prices for good show horses has hit the crapper. What was 10k horses barely bring 2k. Now that some of these backyard worthless horses that people can't afford have a market. And not much is on the market good horse wise because owners know they won't get squat. Fantastic, I might make a few bucks on the one I am selling!

Yep, no more long rides to Canada.  I am sure PETA is having a fit.  Oh well, keep some more economy in the US, no disrespect to our friends up north, but we need all the help we can get down here.  We are saddled with an incompetent leader, 2012 can't get here fast enough.  (lol)

Surprisingly PETA leaders have issued statements supporting the re-opening of the facilities.  They claim they couldnt have anticipated the grave consequences that closing the facilities would have on horses, even though everyone who actually had a brain tried to warn them. But they say in light of facts, they think it is better for horses to be killed humanely in regulated U.S. facilities rather than die the slow agonizing deaths of neglect, starvation and disease or risk them suffering the brutal deaths of unregulated Mexican facilities.
Facts: Before the close of the U.S. facilities they killed on average about 200,000 head annually...In the years since closing about 180,000 head cross Mexican and Canadian borders for slaughter, so they really didnt curve the trend....in the 5 yrs since the ban documented/investigated cases of neglect, starvation, abuse have more than tripled...with the economy its not so much an issue of unwanted horses, but a rising number of people who can no longer afford to care for their horses...thus horses have been turned out to fend for themselves increasing the wild horse populations and the number of wild horses in holding facilities...many owners who no longer have the resources to care for horses are not willing to send them to sales because they love their horses and are unwilling to risk them going to Mexico.

Its funny that about 90% of those speaking out against horse slaughter are urbanites who would be incapable of even keeping a gerbil or goldfish allive much less have any clue about how to care for a horse. Also some of those who know absolutely nothing about caring for a horse have tried to open rescues which are overcrowded and horses dont receive adequate care and they get government grants for them, yet those honest horseman that truly love their horses and hit hard times are not able to get government grants to provide proper care for their horses.  My solution is this, if any of you know anyone who is against horse slaughter and feels that all horses can be saved, please collect those peoples names and addresses, we will start collecting the starving or neglected horses, and those from people who simply cant afford to care for them anymore, and those on kill trucks headed to Mexico and Canada, and those in holding and so called rescue facilities that arent receiving adequate care.  We will collect all of these horses and start delivering them to those people who think they no better and sign a contract that they must provide adequate care to the standards of the AVMA and AAEP on their OWN DIME.  I know I could easily place a couple hundred horses a day if not more probably.  Let these people provide adequate care on their own dime and face prosecution if they fail to, just like they think everyone else should.  Let them do that for a while and see how long it takes them to be in favor of horse slaughter.

Interesting PETA would be for it, but I can see where you are going.

I was completely floored to see PETA's statement, seeing as they were the biggest lobbiers to get it banned in the first place.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.  Still greatly misinformed folks.

Actually this might be a good thing as with all the horses coming out of the US the salvage value of horses has been very low. What with the economy and low slaughter prices the horse industry up here is really having a bad time!(To say nothing of the race horse industry in Alberta which is in free fall since they managed to lose their main race track)

That's good to hear! I did a debate on horse slaughter and when they passed the bill the number of horses exported to mexico and canada jumped 300%. All they managed to do was drive the price of horses into the ground, cut a few thousand jobs, and make it even worse for the horse.
