The thing with Texas is you can never single out a specific steer to beat when heading to a show.  There will be a way more steers there good enough to win it all than there are even spots in the champion drive.  The shows get really tough and really deep down here.  I would say it ussually comes down to breeds to watch more than specific animals to beat.  The last several years with the slick shows, the breeds to get around have been the Chars and the AOB's.  I didnt get to watch all of it today as I was at work, and only saw bits and pieces of it.  But what I saw of the Char show, the Champ Char of Kannon Acker's was pretty good and is going to be one that is gonna be in contention in the Champ Drive in my opinion.

We were there last weekend with my roommates students and nieces and nephews heifers.  We were gonna try and make it down today to watch the show, but other than the ones on spring break the rest of us couldnt get off work and on top of that, one of the old show heifers bogged down trying to cross the creek and drowned in the torrential rain we had this week, so now we are trying to get the calf to suck the Jersey nurse cow.
Know anybody with a May, June, or July show?  Think this blue roan steer will be good for a county, we just wont ever get him finished for our Feb county show.

Oh no...this calf was just born in January, so he would need to be for a 2013 show.  Once we get him bounced back from loosing his mama I will get some pics of him.

I watched yesterday online...and agree-the Charolais is a contender.  Went and watched in person today.  The AOB is a player....Kaiti Robinson had that buddy on Q this morning.....looked AWESOME and Hoge loved him (it seemed).

To me I think Hoge pics steers the way they are supposed to, and I think he is great with the kids in the ring.  I think he has done an amazing job sorting these classes, and explaining it so that the kids and spectators both know exactly why they placed where they placed.  Sure he wants one with some style and integrity, but above all he is gonna pic the one that he thinks is gonna hang the best carcass, and I think Kati Robertsons AOB proved that.  I definately think it comes down to him and Char.  I havent been there in person, but watching online, for me I think the edge goes to the Char, he seems to have as much mass and carcass as the AOB in a slightly prettier package, but I dont think you can go wrong with either of them.
