There were some VERY nice calves that left the ring without being pulled. I guess it can happen when there is 40 to 50 in the class. One class, I think it was the light weight Maines, was a complete mess. There were steers everwhere. It took them a bit but they finally got them all sorted out and in line or out of the ring.
I really dont know how you can pull 15 to 20 steers without ever putting your hands on them.

There's no reason to handle a fat other than to put on a show so nobody complains do u think cattle buyers go to the feedlot and handle every steer to see if there fat these are slick steers so if u can't see finish on them u shouldn't be judgin anyway

I have to disagree. You can feel freshness as well as feel for the "proper" covering. Not too much and not too little. Even when feeling for the finish, judges continue to struggle with finding that "choice" or "prime" marbleing. It is impossible to "see" that a calf is finished correctly.

Ill agree to disagree but if u know someone who can feel marbling then wow more power to them because graders get to see the carcass and are only right about 80 percent

I have always thought Daniels was the best and he proved it again.  We were very fortunatel yes, I won't go into that but he chose complete, sound cattle with muscle.  I thought he did a particularly good job in the LW limmis so I'm not sure what your talking about there.  Granted I didn't watch the Brahmans but you have to know enough by now to expect that.  I told the contending bidder on that brahman last year he would never win breed because of the skin up front he had.  Right or wrong if you pay attention to what these guys have done in the past you know what to expect.

Randy Daniels for President!

Well, u think he is the best, i was in agreeance before i saw him judge here. In the LW Limi's the best steer in there was 4th, the class winner should have been 2nd no doubt. Believe me ive been paying attention to what they do for a long time, i actually exhibited the grand overall at SA in 06 when Daniels judged, so i think i knw what he likes. The brahman i was talking about was great fronted for the breed, they all have a lil extra skin up there.

im experienced in reading structure, and he flat out made some bad calls on soundness. Still, my biggest problem with his reasons, were the steers he said only good things about and never explained why they were beat. If your gonna beat a steer at least explain why, then i would have no problem.

There was a small Wal Mart between 1st and the rest in the LW limmis.  He said that was the easiest thing he had done that day.  The problem most people will have with that calf is he was a 3/4 blood limi and looked like one.  A good one.  I'm sure the 4th was good and most of the time, anything in the top five could win on a given day with a different judge.  Next time, I would suggest you go get one like you had in 06 at San Antonio and you won't have anything to worry about.

Liked the photo of the Grand Steer. IMO, ideal structure and proportion.  Refreshing to see steers look like real bovine again without the all the fluff.

I think these slick shows helps to keep us on track and reminds us of what we really need to be producing.

From what i've heard just a nice calf. I was told that he was raised by Randy Dainels so image that he won.

Calf was raised by the Maples of AL - they are good people, have good cattle, and have one of the best customer service programs I know of.

i'm back at Houston and got to look over the Grand and Reserve steers up close in their viewing pen.  I took some photos that I will get up here next week.

Obviously both calves are real nice.  I was able to feel the Grand pretty good and he is very, very smoothly finished, but much softer than I'm used to.  I think the calf is much better looking in person than the photo.  He is pretty darned flawless.  He is heavily muscled, but not overly, but he's as deep bodied and smooth looking as any I've ever seen.

See thats the thing, i had nothing to d with the sterr that was 4th in lW Limis. the 1st place steer was nice, but if he was the easiest thing all day, then why did he compare the 4th place steer back to the 1st, and say "i couldn't figure out which one i liked better, but from an industry standpoint the class winner fits better" Then why the heck was he fourth and not 2nd

So where do you get off complaining about champions. ur pic under your name was one of the plainest champs ive seen in a while, he wasnt good looking, he was tight in 4rib, plain behind his shoulder, coarse shouldered, and extremely deep chested and too fat.  i did see him in person and got to handle him and everything, have u seen the one ur complaining about, cuz that steer was absolutely perfect in his structure and appeal from the side.

However, i also handled him today, he was extremely soft and plain over his top and loin.

I agree with that.  I don't remember the 4th but he had to be better than second in that class.
