I have my eye on a couple heifers for my daughter. A couple of them have sires and dams known for producing females that become very good mothers. However, one we like was sired by MAB.  I would like to know how MAB cows are performing in the pasture.  Are they doing a good job raising their calves?

I'm guessing by the lack of responses that we'll have to wait until next summer to find out the answer.

I guess so. Just thought since the bull was born in 2010, there would be a few people with a MAB cow. I think I will stay away from MAB heifers for now and stick with the heifers that have proven maternal genetics.

I like MAB. I've seen some good calves out of him. The problem I've seen is you never hear about them winning any shows. I've heard that they can get coarse jointed. The best ones I hsve seen were out of soft, feminine featured cows.

Stewart Skiles had a chromed up steer that won every where this past year. It won early and they took him to Kansas City, unfortunately was in class with Kroupa and Bonham

MAB has had a ton of winnners. Shoot look at the beef expos last year the majority of them winning were out of him. If I remember right the top 5 in Michigan were out of him (Actually the Supreme heifer was a full sib) but they are winning all over the place. There is a reason his semen is going for 250 a pop right now. As far as cow in the pasture out of him havent heard.

I stand corrected and I am glad too. A few months ago, I posted a thread on how MAB calves were doing and I didn't get much of a response. I have a simangus cow I want to use him on this next May. I just figured that his semen was so expensive because he was either injured or wasn't freezing.

He isnt freezing but its in such high demand also. This spring I ordered some for a buddy and it was being shipped as he froze. Also if you look at a lot of these online sales (whether they are real or fake price) most of the high sellers are MAB sired.

We would all love for our show heifers to turn into great cows, but the reality is that it's somewhat pointless to worry about that.  If you are showing, your priority almost has to be to select one that do well.

There's too much variability in any breed or crossbreed to think you find the great looking show heifer that will also make the great cow.  For the most part, my best looking heifers hardly ever make my best cows (as far as raising show calves).  I find that problem more prevalent with my purebred Angus than even with my crossbred girls.

That being said, MAB females should have a chance to make fine mommas.  I've got some being bred this fall for the first time, but none that have calved yet.

If they have mothers that are excellent milkers that is one of the first steps to making good replacements.Clubby females usually work best in the show ring but there are exceptions.Several  donors can only raise decent calves via embryo.

Your right some MAB calves are selling well. I've seen some calves that their best day was picture day. They weren't MAB calves by the way.  I haven't seen many MAB steers yet. I just want to be sure that when I sell a calf that its best days are still ahead.
