I read where the Michigan State Fair was cancelled, their numbers had been dropping and the state could no longer subsidize them. The article gave numbers for other fairs in adjacent states.
The numbers made me curious so I looked at our county fairs numbers as well as our state fairs numbers. Our county fair had 1,338,500 visitors this year, our state fair had 741,189, our county fair had close to 600,000 more people than our state fair.
Our state fair changed the dates for the fair to a month earlier this year since attendance had been dropping (this is mostly due to the school years starting earlier and earlier each year) They saw an increase in attendance.

So how big is your county fair and your state fair?

The Iowa State fair is usually right around one million people for the 11 day run.  The support by the state of this grand institution is amazing and the participation in all of the events is extremely strong.  Over the past 10 to 15 years they have renovated practically every facility on the grounds and added many new.  We are extremely fortunate to have such an event.  I believe it made USA Today's top 10 things to do in the United States.....

Oklahoma has 2 State Fairs, Back-to-back.  The State Fair of Oklahoma (OKC) draws about 1,000,000, and two weeks later, the Tulsa State Fair draws about 915,000.  Our rural county, about 35,000 population has a 5-day Pontotoc County Free Fair which is expected to draw around 60,000.  Considering the total Population of Oklahoma is 3,650,000, the Fairs are significant events.

That is a pretty good draw from such a small pool of people.
I know they counted me every time I went into the fair,  wich was from 4 to 10 times a day depending on what was going on that day we were there for 8 days, 9 if you count move out. Our county fair runs for 3 weeks and is only closed on 2 mondays during that time.
We camp in the horse stables.

For the Iowa State Fair, they only count the number of tickets sold in their attendance records.  That way they don't count all of us who run back and forth to the trailer or the motel...
