Whats everyones feeding routine when calves are in the cooler?

What are your opinions about full feeding the whole ration at nite when turned out, with no grain during the day?

I'm asking because my calves are not eating their morning feeding when in the cool barn?

Also what do you do when more cover is needed but don't want to up the energy too much.

We don't feed in the cooler, we feed morning and night and they have full access to hay all night.  If you are only going to feed once a day I would feed in the morning since that is when you need them to be full at a show.

Morning and evening - 12 hours apart.  Our calves are fed the morning feeding in the cool room as soon as they are brought in from outside, and then tied.  They are fed in the evening in the cool room again, before rinsing and brushing.  Turned out after dark with full access to hay.

I feed 1/2 the ration in the morning and heep them tied up with hay during the day, then at night I feed the other 1/2 ration. This routine has worked for me and I have finished two limousin steers like this. Before the calves eat I rinse them off, then while they are eating I brush them and blow them off. I keep them under fans because I don't have a cooler. Then the same routine with rinsing and feeding at night!! Hope this helps! Also if you work them before they eat, it might make them a little more hungry!
