Just for curisoty I created this poll to see how many cows the average SP member owns/ or runs.

I'm basing this on how many cows you will calve in the next year. So mature females only please,

Thanks for voting!

Do you mean OWN, or "manage or have control over"? There is a big difference in my opinion.

The original question in this thread says " How many cows the average SP member owns/ or runs. I'm basing this on how many cows you will calve in the next year"

To me, owns or run refers to the number of cows you own and/ or manage on your place or farm. It is a combination of both.

Looks like we are part of the minority calving 175....tell you what, there have been many, many times in the last few years that I wish we only had 10.  But it's in the blood.... ;D

It would be like saying "I have a hundred kids"  I HAVE CONTROL OVER THEM"    When actually you may have none...none may be at your home or premices on a routine basis..
Boy i started it this time...lol

We have between 60-100 depending on the year and markets.... really wish we had more when the calves are coming out good and wish we had way less when we call the vet for a c section more than once a month

This is the type of question my husband would jump on my butt about...he'd say its sorta like asking someone how much land they own?

My business (besides tending to livestock) is selling ranches here in Central Texas so I find myself asking that question (how much land) pretty often, when he's with me I do still get that "look" from my husband!!  He says its like asking someone how much money they have!

Though I realize this day and time you're never quite sure...who owns it (land or cattle)!  Sometimes its the BANK!

We run about 50 head.  Give or take....husband runs alot of sheep...says they'll pay for those cattle!!  (thinking he may be right)

Your husband must be a 'real' cattleman!  The first thing I learned when I first moved to Wyoming and worked on a 'real' (make that 'large) cattle ranch is that you never ask a rancher how many cattle they run nor how many acres they ranch.  It's like asking somewhat what their net worth is.  They consider it somewhat rude.

If you fell my question is "rude" (which it certainly wasn't intended to be) you simply have the option of not responding to the thread or not answering the poll.

The poll was ment for "fun" and interest sake only, and is annonymous, I answered along with 146 other people so I don't think it is a bizzare question at all and certainly one that comes up many, many times in my day to day business.

Furthermore, I don't think that the number of cows you run necesarily dictates how much money you have have or very much financially really. In this day in age it is entirely possible to generate more revenue off a handful of "The Right" cows versus HUNDREDS of average commercial cows.

  Just my oppinion.

We have close to 100 now. 90 of them are SimAngus commercial cows. Trying to get a 'clubby' herd started, we've got about 10 Maine influenced females. The cow pictured is one of my 13 year old commercial cows AI'd to Monopoly.

A large grain farmer asked me how many cows we ran , I asked him how much grain he had in his bins, he didn't answer me, he must of not liked the question.

(thumbsup)
I answer that question "tongue-in-cheek". "When you tell me the balance in your bank accounts, I'll tell you how many cows I own!"

Or the one I like best. "When it comes to sellin'em, not enough! And when it comes to feedin'em, too many!"

It's like asking somewhat what their net worth is.

Disagree totally.....maybe if that all you do is raise cows, it's somewhat a reflection of your net worth, but, as evident by the poll above, the vast majority of the people on this board  have other facets making up their net worth.

Can't make a living on 100 cows only.  Unless you are selling $5,000 steers consistently.

Answer away, folks.  It's interesting to see the size of operations involved here.

BTW, if someone is interested in my net worth, PM me....I'm not worth alot and have nothing to hide!  Got some darn good kids though, a full time job, and ocassionally my wife makes supper and washes clothes!
