How many people do this on their heifers? Is shaving off the necks just a matter of preference?

It really depends on the animal..we have a limousin that isnt the most feminine of the group that we will always slick the neck on,  she looks good with it done that way. thats for sure, and with the amount of hair that you get on them from the shoulders back can really make them look super feminine! Thats the way this limi is.

Used to all the time! Using guides on my Andis works great and easy to teach to the kids!

Really depends on the calf. Some calves need the hair up front and you blend it back into the body. Others need to be shorter. I think you have to evaluate your animal. do they need to be more feminine or thinner to reduce the prominence of a shoulder etc. We clip come calves shorter than others just depends.

In heifers it varies somewhat between breeds, also.  It's very much the norm with Limi's, pretty common with Angus', Chi's, Simmi's... less so with Maine's, Shorthorn's and Hereford's unless they're pretty short haired anyway.  Like others have said, to me it should depend on the individual animal, but we have been scolded by judges for not slicking the necks of Limi heifers (they were blocked in nice and tight, too).

Steers, I'd say it depends, but if there's enough hair to block it in, we usually try to do that rather than slicking it off.

So If you have an animal that has pretty short hair on their neck (like not very much to work with) would it probably be best just to slick their neck down?

If its already short to the point where you cant really work with it my personal preference would be to leave it be if it blends ok or you can kinda blend it in, it should look fine. No sense in trying to clip hair that's barely there to begin with then to chance putting a gouge in there neck that looks even worse!  O0

Most in our breed take the necks pretty short. The best way I have found is to take it as short as the medium blades will go (or the big flat heads) about 3 weeks before the show. Then it grows out some and just needs a little touch up closer to show day. That is what someone taught me and it was great advice.  I do think alot of it is your preference, what your breed typically does, or what best fits your clipping skill.

I use a medium blade on the necks.  Always go with the direction of the hair not against.  I think it just looks smoother.
