I am now in the process of bringing in a building from my Dad's place to use as a showbarn & Calving barn.  Half will be cement with a wash rack and the other will be a dirt surface where the tie stalls will be.  How many inches of cedar fiber do you need?  Should you put a layer of lime or other down first?  I will of course clean the manure daily, How often do you rinse the urin down, do you soak the bedding daily?  I don't want a slop hole.  Any other suggestions on keeping a fresh tidy barn would be great!

Thanks,

RSC

we have about 8" of mulch down. we don't have lime but it's a good idea. Also put down a mat for diggers! I clean out the manure several times a day and spray down when it's dusty. I am like you it gets really wet if too much water is used. also slope the mulch downwards.

We put down pea gravel in areas where there is straw too.

Want pictures when all done!

everytime i go to the barn i shovel something....if i see it i have to clean it up...my husband thinks its kind of anal...and has actually accused me of keeping a cleaner barn than house....some days id probably have to agree with him....but anyway....it just seems alot easier to me that way...instead of having to spend an hour or two in the evenings cleaning stalls, i usually never have to spend more than 5 or 10 minutes (and thats usually first cleaning in the mornings, 2 or 3 minutes all the other times) picking stalls

we always strip everything out at least once a year....and always right before calving...put a good healthy coat of lyme down....and we just use sawdust....its so much cheaper than mulch and easier to pick the stalls than mulch...and there is an abundant supply of it...we have sawmills around every bend down here....
