This year I got a heifer and she has been to 2 shows so far.The first show we took her to she acted fine but a little bit jumpy.I didn't think nothing of it since it was her first show though. The second show we took her to,which was a couple weeks ago,she acted crazy! In showmanship,I knew she was going to act up because she was acting up in holding but i got pulled because she was acting sp bad and they was afraid I was going to get hurt but I'm not really strong enough to really stop her from doing much. Before weight class, lets just say her and my brother "had a few words" if you know what i mean.He also gave her a whole tube of Calf Calm, which is more than we're supposed to give her but she was absolutly crazy.Right before i went in for weight class, she tried to run off but i was able to stop her with my showstick So my brother showed her for me.He even had trouble handling her.She does fine at home.We work with her everynight and set her up.At shows, she hates it when people walk behind her.She gets spooked, but at home anyone can walk behind her and she'll stand still.I have a big show next week.Is there anything I can do before or at the show to keep her calm when i go in the ring?
--Thanks:)

My opinion is..... Play a radio all day long, put her in a high traffic area, dogs, kids, vehicles, ect. Do you live in town, how fast ics it too the nearest park? Seriously, she needs to be desensitized. Go back to the basics and work her hard, and expose her to as much as you can. Calm calf is just a gimmick, only works on few and they need to be calm yi start with.

We give ours 1/2 amount of calf calm 24 hrs before the show and then the other half about 2 hrs before show. It worked well. I agree with the statement about playing the radio and such. We also do that. Another thing might be that you said your brother "had a few words" I'm guessing he wasn't the calmest in saying them. Try to stay calm when bringing her to,from, and in the show ring. If they feel your tense they probably will be too. Another idea if it is possible is to walk her to and around the show ring before the actual show starts to try to get her used to the environment.

We walk our real good the night before and the morning of the show. I dont like to use calf calm unless we have to. We have found that walking them works well for us.

I agree. Walking them works very well for us, and some friends have had good success with giving the wilder animals a snort of Ace up their nose. I'm not sure if this is exactly healthy for the animal, but they seem to get along fine with it if the animal is just too wild I handle otherwise. Of all the thigs we have tried, radio, exposure to new people and walking them in the ring before the show seem to work the best, so I agree with everyone else's posts!  ;D
