Does anybody have any good factual articles about animal care and raising practices? Can be either hogs or cattle. On a local Facebook page there is quite the debate going on raising and caring for livestock. I am trying to explain to people how most operations are ran but I got told since I don't have any articles to back me up I am blowing smoke basically. The lady that I am mainly arguing with is very against antibiotics. I am also going to keep searching.

There will be articles that you will find to defend both sides. Not sure why print is the only way she would change her mind.

Ask her if the animals should die?

Is she a vegetarian.

Ask her about choice. I bet she's against it except for you know what.

This is coming from a lady who believes all animals are fed antibiotics and she was telling people that mad cow disease was caused because dairy cows live in confinements. I really don't want to change her mind but she's calling for facts and the other city folk are seeing her articles and videos and are believing that this is how animals are treated. I did ask her if she had a sick animal if she would treat it or let it die her response was she would treat but if it was reall hers it would have been prevented. She claims that all natural and organic animals never get sick.

In all honesty I have tried to have these conversations with people who are uneducated about how we raise and handle livestock and it typically gets me pretty hot because you can show them all of the facts that you want, done by independant researchers and they still will not believe it because it goes against what they believe. Now if they are told something that is extremely far from the truth but in favor they will jump all over that idea and make it their own. I really wish it wasnt this way but the few bad eggs out there have made the rest of us that really care for our animals suffer not to mention that with technology today you can alter any video to make a farm look bad. I know what you are going through just make sure you are being polite when discussing this with her, even though, i know its hard to do when people are narrow minded but you do not want to come off as an a**hole

It probably won't make a difference what facts you show her she isn't going to believe anything that goes against her mindset but others will be interested.
Here is a recent naturally occurring illness in a very remote region of the Northwest Territories. I don't see how man can be blamed for this one so it should be interesting to she how she paints it ::)
Population of NWT is 41,462 with a density of 0.10 person per square mile. Total area 519,734 sq mi

Google Temple Grandin. The most respected figure in animal welfare and humane handling.

Doubt if anything will change her mind, but it might be another view for the others to consider.  I would venture to guess she is the first to run to a doctor and whine about a cold or the flu and insist on antibiotics when in fact, antibiotics do absolutely NO GOOD on viruses. Yet she would demand them so she could feel better. And then she would probably not completely finish that prescription because she "feels better" and does not kill all the "bug". THAT is the reason for resistant strains of bacteria. It has very little to do with antibiotic use in animals.

I admire you for trying to educate this uneducated lady. Stay respectful, stay mature, and while you may not change her mind, you will win the argument.

I have always admired Duff's on how they raise their cattle.  Forward to 3 minutes 55 seconds.  Most animals can't make the "never ever" status, but some do.  With that much premium, I am sure everyone would quit antibiotics if they could.

one of the best rationalizations i've heard for keeping heirloom breeds alive is to eat them.

perhaps she wants all farm bred animals to die?
