Tylenol PM and a long soak in a warm tub with epsom salts.  (Take the pills after you soak!)

What is the nature of the injury and how long ago did you injure it. The first twenty four hours post any strain sprain of muscle you want to ICE. Then after that use heat. They make these little pads that come in a foil pack that you can put on your back and they will heat up. Walgreens etc drug stores have them. If you are really hurting ICE Hot is good to help sooth the area. Aspercreme is an oldie but a goodie. Then, pills, if it is a strain with swelling you want to take a nonsteriodal anti inflammatory or a NSAID like IBUPROFEN/ Motrin. That ususally reduces the swelling and relieves the pain. If this is a chronic thing then I would use Motrin and heat. If this is a new injury, go and get yourself examined. I have tore lower muscles before in my back from a very "fresh" heifer. Thought it was just the usually pain, but go worse. Don't mess with it. You don't want to have a host of future problems.

Its been sore for about two weeks now, in my lower back, its a sore muscle thing. I probably just strained it a little  breaking the new heifers. Its not so bad that I cant do any thing I even moved 125 square bales yesterday and while I was doing it, it did not bother me much but when I came in the house and sat down it started to ache. I dont have a tub but did stand in a hot shower and have been using the sticky heat pads which have helped some. I just need something that will help me sleep without having a sleep aid as I have a old dog that wakes me up sometimes to go out in the middle of the night. It is somewhat recurring but not a chronic thing, I wish I could see the acupuncturist but need to wait till she is back in town that has helped in the past.

When the muscle is warm and there is increase flow of blood to the area you don't have as much discomfort. But you sit down and compress vessels and inflammation will "set in". That is where the pain comes in. Heat and anti inflammatory. Tylenol PM works great as well as Nyqill can't spell. If you can't get relief, I always suggest you seek medical attention. Unfortunately, we have alot of blood vessels and nerves in our lower back. Injury can cause swelling scarring etc and compression of those nerves. UNFORTUNATELY, age has not helped us either when it comes to this process. We start to crumble. :-\

I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. I am an Ex Emergency Room Nurse.

I have had lower back surgery twice for ruptured discs, if you start feeling pain go down one of your legs or have numbness in your toes seek medical help immediately.  For strains stretching is an excellent way to relieve muscle spasms, also I use a TENS unit.  This is a small electrical unit with gel covered electrodes that you place on the injured area.  It basically stimulates circulation and eases severe muscle spasms by blocking nerve messages to the muscle group.  Keep in mind these do not work on major injuries.  I purchased one from a medical supply company for $90, they are great to use on all parts of the body except around the head.  Good luck, I would not wish severe back pain on my worst enemy, it changes your whole life.

I go to a pain management doctor for both my back & legs. It's no fun having problems w/ either. Especially when you have to do any lifting or pulling.
Good luck! How does the acupuncturist (SP?) work? Is it something that you have to keep going to?

We do hay for a lady that is a acupuncturist and I get a free appointment every year. My neck will become very stiff from square baling, anyone that has done it knows what I mean as you sit all day turned half way back and moving your neck back and forth alot. Any way that one time usually helps my neck. The premise is it helps get the blood flow where you need it. The funny thing is for my neck I get needles in my neck down my back and my ankles and wrists. Then she attaches electrods and pulses electricity to help even more. I love they way it makes me feel and it is very relaxing. We had a friend that hurt his hip and he went a few times a week for a while and it fixed him right up where the regular doctors were talking hip replacement surgery. My friend does not do it but some acupuncturist are also chiropractors. For a very severe case in my neck I went to her teacher. He is right from China and very hard to understand. He chops up herbs and such right on the sidewalk like you think you would see in China. He is brutal though, I will only go to him if a bad case.
