The mutation that causes hydrocephalus in Angus has been identified as a single base pair change resulting in the production of an abnormal protein. It is inherited as a simple recessive. FMI go to the AAA web site listed above.

Weird/abnormal calf - save an ear - if we give him the samples he will find the mutation (apologies to Kevin Costner in whatever movie that was )

actually in this case congrats to BR - if she gets the ears she gets the mutation - what a woman!

This is different than curly calf right?

yes - different mutation, but goes thru 1680 - but don't tell anyone - they don't really want to know or get to the bottom of anything

I love to know who is a carrier for what, but I will wait till the bulls are tested either way. Just hate the innuendos of who is not doing what you say when you say it.

frostback - you were one of the people who bugged me incessantly for information back in the TH and PHA hunt days - there is NO INNUENDO WHEN I SAY I HAD A CALF WITH SPASTIC PARESIS SIRED BY MONEY MAN IT IS A FACT - LIKE IT OR NOT

THERE IS NO INNUENDO WHEN SWMO SAYS SHE HAD A CALF SIRED BY MM WHO HAD SPASTIC PARESIS - it is a fact

It is NO different that saying someone had a 140 pound calf sired by Mondo or a 20 pound calf sired by Midgie or a calf with contracted tendons sired by Buckleover - or a calf with 2 head sired by Double or a calf with hydrocephalus sired by 1680 or an albino calf sired by Mt Blanc or a blind calf sired by Sightless or a calf with monkey mouth sired by Jawbone

It is no different that saying you had a great calf sired by Super boy and it is not different that people posting picture of their calves noting the sires

IT IS SIMPLY THE EXPERIENCE OF INDIVIDUALS -  take it for what it is and don't try to turn it into something else

So, what are the chances of isolating the gene/deletion of "the other" hydro? Especially if it turns out, and probably is, an incomplete penetrate?

Maybe like looking for a needle in 3 Brazilian hay stacks.

Obama was found the other day in the oval office crying! When asked by an aid, what was the matter? He said " I just heard 10 Brazilian citizens  lost their lives in an earth quake! Just how many is a Brazilian?"

Did you'all know Obama's name isn't in spell-check? Of course, mine isn't either!

ELBEE - we need a minimum of 6 affected calves if it is recessive (which we think it isn't) and more if it is something else - so it could be one or a Brazilian Brazilions - did U Nebraska send a sample to Dr B?? don't know if dragon lady spell checks or not ;)
