We just got done AI'ing all of our cows. I have noticed a lot of people talking about buying certificates on the semen that they get. Do you have to have a certificate on the straw of semen before you can register the calf that comes from AI? What exactly is a certificate and what does it mean?

If you are going to register the calves with the ASA you will have to buy an AI certificate for each calf you are going to register.  Usually you can buy them from your semen distributor or the bulls"s owner.

Nope, just when you have a calf to register. You could buy the cert at the time you buy the semen, but it might end up being a waste if the cow doesnt stick.

Well thats definetely a good thing. We are pretty excited about a couple pairings and would sure hate to have messed that deal up from the start!! One thing bothers me about it though, say some guy has a really good female that looks like Sonny or a really good bull calf that has markings similer to Solution...what keeps the pedigrees honest? Guess this business is like my other love, golf. A game of integrity.

DNA test the calves is what I would do. All of those AI sires and ET dams have their DNA on file.  But you're right, it can come down to a game of integrity.
