I have a 4H livestock judging club and I need some ideas on fun activites to do with them. Any ideas?? I did not grow up doing any kind of judging so I have been learning as we are going. I just need some ideas on things to do with with to keep their attention and have some fun.  Thank you!

when our daughter was on a judging team they judged just about anything to give reasons. Even things like pencils, rocks & etc.
A good tool would be to make sure they know the parts of the animals. Can you get posters that have their different parts named?
Have fun & good luck!

I don't know how often you meet, but a long time ago I was a 4H leader and, especially in the summer, we were meeting every week.  It's easy to get stale with that much time spent together on the project - whatever it is.  So, once a month we'd have what I called the "Eating Meeting".  Everyone came to my place, I put out the eats, and we just sat around and talked casually about our projects (dogs, in this case).  Creative juices flow when it gets informal and everyone learns without even realizing it.  Maybe you could do something simiilar with everyone commizerating on reasons, proper form, easy note taking, organizing thoughts when taking the first look at the liveestock, etc ., etc.  I'll bet lots of ideas and concerns would come up and pull the team even closer together as everyone realizes their challenges are 'everyones' challenges!

Everybody has had some great ideas...we used to do the judging classes of other things...like hay bales, hairdo's, snow men, peanut butter cookies (be sure to include a burnt one) etc.  It is soooo easy for livestock judging kids to experience burn out, so it is so important to have fun.  If kept in a silly spirit, our kids have even given reasons on each other.  Not for everybody!  My favorite is when sets of reasons must be given in another dialect.  EX:  scottish accent, Texas drawl, uptite city slicker, etc.  Have fun!
