I've been searching this site and found some good info. We have a calf that was a backwards pull and he has an infected navel. I have Excenel just wondering if anyone has had luck with using it. How many cc's and how many days worked for you? We are having bad luck calving heifers this year :'(. First one (herford) had a 90# backwards bull calf and now our 100plus # shorthorn calf ::). Good thing we only have the 2.

It's been a rough year around here too.  Talked to the vets yesterday and they said this is the busiest they have ever been (good for them bad for us).  Can't wait to get these cattle on grass away from this mud.  As for the excenel we have used it with good success.  We gave 3cc a day for 5 days along with 10cc penicillin.  We also extened the penicillin for another 4 days. We haven't seen any signs of the infection coming back YET and hope it stays that way.  As with any illness or infection it's just about as important that you treat as early as possible.  Good luck and know your not the only one.

That's the nice thing about forums, somethimes you just need the support and know that your not the only one with problems. The dose on the bottle says 1cc/100lbs. is it ok to up the amount?

I just know what we did after talking with our vet.  Ours was about a 100 pound calf and we gave 3cc as was their recomendation, give your vet a call they would be able to tell you.  First thing I would do is take the calfs temp and check out the navel for size, temp, texture as that will give your vet the best idea on what course to go.  Sorry but I am not a vet myself so I can't tell you to exceed the dose myself but 3cc is what  we did. Good luck

I will call her later. I know extra dosing needs to be prescribed by a vet, was just wondering what worked for others. Thank you very much ;D

Nuflor hyas worked very well on Navel infections around here,

If I have a calf that I am nervous of (cow calves in a mud puddle or something silly, difficult birth or weaker calf than expected) I give 5cc of Nuflor Sub-Q at birth.

I haven't had a navel issue in years.
