I have been looking at bulls and I am looking at 3 in particular. I have a quite a mix of cows but several are Irish Whiskey granddaughters, some angus cows going back to sitz alliance, and some clubby breds etc. Anyway I would like to breed for both steers and heifers, but the bulls realistically are all probably more maternal type sires. So what I was wondering is if any of you could give me any input on any of these sires of these different bulls. I know the cows have a lot to do with it too, and it is much more important what the individual is like than who there sire is but I was just wondering what peoples experiences or thoughts on these sires are. Thanks in advance! So one is a Whizard son, one is a Sooner son, and one is a Hardcore son

My mentor in the Show Calf business told me early on that the Cow is much more important than the Bull.  The books will tell you the opposite. History will show you that breeding an exceptional Cow to an average bull will net you an above average Calf. However, breeding a good Cow to an exceptional Bull will most often net you an average Calf.

The most important thing in selecting a sire is to look for the heritable traits needed to improve that cow.  Seek to breed up your cows.

I subscribe to 'the book' there.  Using your logic, 'breeding up' -in the sense you used it in- wouldn't be plausable.

Either you missed reading the sentence below, or just misuderstood the intent.

The most important thing in selecting a sire is to look for the heritable traits needed to improve that cow.

Example: a very good producing cow has calves which always need more bone. Breed to a good producing bull  proven to add bone.

I agree that the cow is more important and I always AI (not very good at it yet) and I go thru and pick a specific mating for each cow trying to improve what they might be lacking. But right now i am in the market for a cleanup bull so i am looking for something calving ease (cuz I keep replacement heifers) polled, and something that is going to add a little width and bone, oh and that is defect free! So I am looking at sons of the following bulls; Sooner, Whizard, Hardcore, Bojo, Rock Solid. I know they are quite different but anything anyone cares to comment on any of them is very much appreciated.
