So this probably isn't something you hear about a lot on steerplanet, but I figure you all were better suited to help me find an internship that I'm interested in than anyone else!

I am a junior at NC State University, majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Genetics. I have also been selected for the Food Animal Scholars program, which identifies 6 people who are interested in livestock veterinary medicine. It saves a spot for me at NC State's vet school, I just have to maintain my grades and apply. (NCSU is not my first choice of vet schools though.. I would much rather go to Iowa State, Missouri, or Kansas State! :) Don't worry, I will be applying to all of them.) Last summer I worked on a hog farm, and I also live at the apartment at the Swine Educational Unit here at NCSU. (I work for my rent!) This summer I would like to do something with beef cattle since they are my main passion. We have always had cows on the farm, but we are not a huge, intensive operation. I am very interested in reproduction practices such as embryo transfer, AI, etc etc. Anything hands-on! I would love to find a farm (a big show cattle farm would be GREAT) that would take me on and let me learn & do things. I would love to be paid, but I do not mind simply coming onto the farm and learning. My passion is shorthorn cattle, but any breed would be okay! With that being said, does anyone know of an operation that might do this? Or would any of you be interested in taking me on this summer? I'm very eager to learn, and I love to work. If you want to know more about me please PM me.. I am involved in lots of things! Thank you!

Thank you for the help everyone! And yes I have also considered OK State :)
As for Trans Ova Genetics, I wish I had considered it sooner! Maybe I will get a chance to work there later.
I may also have to check into Genex, but the ASA probably doesn't have exactly what I am looking for.
Thank you!

Haynes Livestock,

Kudos to you for thinking outside of the box to obtain a summer internship.  I wish I would have thought of this while in college (especially between my junior and senior year).  As I was reading your post I was thinking back to my days of spending the summers working for breeders.  However, I never thought outside of breeders I already knew in my county and state.  I bet if you contacted some of the major players in the Shorthorn breed directly you may be able to secure a spot and help them or get a good lead on someone else.  It takes guts, but you've got a good story.  The Shorthorn breeders are extremely nice and easy to work with.  You are obviously a bright person and destined for big things.  If I were them I'd be trying to surround myself with as many young, talented, breeders as possible.  It's good business, and makes sense.  Best of luck!!!

I am in Great bend Kansas, fisher show cattle raise shorthorns and show cattle, they may be able to help you.... our embryo work is done at Sun Valley Embryo in Salina... might try them.... Furrow show cattle in Ellinwood raises about 30 head per year of show calves... might be helpful... if you get a spot here in central Kansas we could probably put up with you here at the house... or should I have said put you up?

Well, as I am always checking on Steer Planet I realized-why not ask about internships? The worst anyone can say is no! And I know that there are so many opportunities outside of NC that I would LOVE to be involved in. You all have given me several GREAT options, and I am so happy! And jbzdad, thank you! That all sounds amazing. I will also consider that as well! And I'm not sure.. I may be a handful! ;) Just kidding of course..! Thanks for offering your place. You may regret having to "put up" with me, but who knows. haha!

HL,  did you get my pm?  we have some possible opportunities here for you, I also know of a vet and a fairly large scale non-commercialized ET practice that might work for you.

Check with Garrett Jones (Dr. Randy Jones son Kinston NC)  I hooked him up on a heifer breeding outfit in MT for the summer last year. Great summer if you want to heat check and breed more cows in a summer than most people do in a lifetime.  He should be able to give you the details.

I just thought I would let you all know that I am excited to be working with Fischer Cattle Company this summer! They have been absolutely great about everything. They seem to be very nice people with some really good cattle! I also want to thank Dr. & Mrs. Slater for letting me stay with them at their beautiful house. I can't wait for the opportunity! Thank you to everyone who also helped, and for all the encouragement!
