Everyone has a different opinion, but this is one of my favorites.

probably going to be a crapshoot as the maternal on IW is so terrible.

that said, i have one cow bred to wild turkey, and another pred to pendleton (another PHA-free IW son) for different reasons for this fall.  hopefully something from the cow from either bull pops out.  pendleton would appear to be more predictably bred.

carcass appears to be an issue as well.

I don't think the ice pick line created great females. You got to breed em to a good female to get a good one.

I know he's not proven but it's just a PHA and TH free Whiskey Son, that I figured I'd throw out there. Special Reserve. I thought he looked pretty good and looks like he'd throw some good females, but this is jmo and a new bull so take it for what it's worth. Here's a link to his pick: http://www.cattle.com/

I don't know why the IW maternal is so terrible, they make awesome productive cows.  I wish I had a 100 of them.

Yes it is and the 1 I purchased out of there has done a great job on her 1st calf, I'd take 100 of her any day of the week.

I would say you answered your owne question.  The angus probably made them more maternal.  My opinion is the ice pick line was a huge promotional success.  The popular bulls were used on dang good maternal cows to make great females and continue the promotion

Ours actually was a purebred out of a Chill Factor cow, but agree as a whole, Ice Pick is generally lacking in maternal.

While I agree about Ice Pick, I've always been told the strange thing was how maternal Irish Whiskey is compared to his sire.  If it's just the cows contributing maternal characteristics, why do Heat Wave daughters carry the stigma they do when he's been bred to every maternal powerhouse under the sun?

humans give more weight to negative comments than positive ones.

probably good cross for ice pick influence are to cows who are too maternal.

Your point about giving weight to negative comments should come in to play with Irish Whiskey daughters as well if it were valid for the comparison being made.  Not to disparage Heat Wave but he has been bred to just as many if not many many more maternal cows as Irish Whiskey but their daughters carry quite a different reputation for good reason.

Lumping Irish Whiskey in with his sire is misguided based on everything I've seen and more importantly, from what people much smarter than myself have said.

BTW, I realize there's a bit of chicken and egg thing going on with Collins and maternal bulls but there's also a reason the two most prominent bulls in the Exposure sale last December were Meyer 734 and Irish Whiskey and it's not because Meyer was used on "dang good maternal cows to make great females".

i'm counting on the above being true.
