I have a Hereford heifer that we are wanting to take to Denver this year. she is probably one of the sloppiest one I've had through the neck and throat. I've never used a neck sweat before and want to know if you guys think she would be good candidate. I know that genetics is the biggest factor and neck sweats can only do so much, but I still don't want to put in the money and effort if it wont clean her up some.

Also I did a search on this topic didn't find a clear answer on one of my questions. Would it be better to start her out now and keep her on it through Denver or start later, so many days out from the show?

Thanks guys!

You have time to put one on her for a week and see if it makes a difference and decide then.

If you get one of the purple neck sweats watch to make sure that she doesn't rub it off or another calf eats it, had some heifers do that one year and when they came into the barn the next morning the neck sweats were gone.  So I ended up buying a leather one, they work well.  I also used the Hot Sweat stuff that Sullivan's has, its kind of like a lotion that you rub on before you put the neck sweat on.  If you are going to use a neck sweat you need to leave it on for at least 4 hours a day.  When I used mine I would put it on my calves when I let them out at night and take it off in the morning when they came into the barn.  Hope this helps

If you're going to buy a leather one, look in to the ones Supreme Show Supply has.  I guess they're probably made by Weaver, but anyway the lining is removable so that it can be washed and/or replaced. That would be pretty handy.

The all neoprene ones work best, but llike sassy said, they're not meant to be turned out in - don't leave them on for more than 12 hours at a time, less if you're using something with it to make them sweat.  Leave them on too long and you'll lose hair.  We've had good luck using the neoprene sweat 8 - 10 hours a day for the last 10 - 14 days.

I've heard people say they put a leather one over the neoprene and turned them loose like that.  I've never tried that, so can't speak for it.

DLD I was looking at that kind. They make one that's leather with neoprene on the inside but is not removable, how much wear does the inside take?

I've never used a neoprene lined leather one, or talked to anyone about how they wear.  Our leather ones are all fleece lined.  We used to (as in 30 years ago) use them all the time on everything.  Nowadays not so much - I'll use them for maybe 30 days before we start with the neoprenes.  Most of our cattle never see any kind of neck sweat, though.
