I realize I am very slow in coming to try to understand the breeding on this bull, but I'd like to dissect what's going on in the progress of the Jakes bulls.
Sorry to use E3 as an example, but I consider him to be about as Shorthorn savvy as a person can be and he mentioned having a Proud Leader cow...so I begin to realize how much Irish is in these cattle. Proud Leader looks like a Scotch topped Irish blend. My question is about the dam of Proud Leader. Would a historian please explain her pedigree to me? POLY ROSE 6113

Also,
I can't find photos of Proud Leader, Jakes Pride, Irish Pride or Instant Enticer.
SP is basically THE archive for Shorthorn lore and imagery. I wonder if Jason could build a within site image search feature into the site? All of us are concerned about where the breed is going and vital to that is where the breed has been- the good, bad, ugly and beautiful.

not that it matters, but ohlde helped get cal poly some shorthorns a long time ago shortly after he was involved in bringing dividend over. they did decent at selling them, even selling one cumberland heifer for 20K.

the poly 6113 cow or her mother i think is one of five or so females ohlde bought back from cal poly after they got rid of shorthorns for his son so he would have something different. poly also had some cumberlands.

even though one of the beef leaders at poly at the time was involved in the shorthorn breed, for whatever reason, they got rid of them.

they had 3 breeds at the time, herefords, angus, and shorthorns.  it was a fun time.  there were still lots of fullbloods of other breeds around.

i don't think any of these animals have had enough generations in one environment

Here is a picture of Jake's Natalia 285N, who is still going strong at almost 13yrs old. She is out of a  TPS Coronet Leader 21st and Poly C Maid 2112.  Ohlde brought 2112 back in a group of females from Cal Poly.  2112 is the mother of Poly Rose 6113.  My female is out of the same mother as 6113  and my female would be a half sister to Proud Leader as they are both out of Leader 21.

Thanks Iowa. I read some of your old posts and found this thread about Sultan of Jazz that's has a lot of good information.http://www.steerplanet.com/bb/the-big-show/jakes-sultan-of-jazz/msg386885/#msg386885
And another thread about the mysterious AHL Kodiak http://www.steerplanet.com/bb/the-big-show/ahl-kodiak-37549/msg325412/#msg325412
I've been looking at pictures and these bulls have so much Shorthorn character. I think we are missing a great opportunity in not concentrating and cooperating on breeding clean lines from these animals.
Pictures of Proud Star and Prince of Jazz.
I'd like to see as many pictures as possible of this line of cattle so we can compare them to one another on the same page and observe what the dominant features are. Probably you guys have been all through this but many people haven't.

This is an interesting low BW, high CE looking cow to me. I hope you have bred her to a selection of asterisk free bulls.

I mis spoke. My cow is not out of Proud Leader. She is out of FSF Jazz Leader. She was bred by Lee Miller. Jazz Leader is a DS carrier. One of the smaller shorthorn Bulls I've seen. 1700 tops I'd say. Jazz Leader is a Leader  21rst out of Proud Jazz's dam. The cow I have out of him is under 1000 pounds easy. But she raised a nice big calf. I'll find a picture of Jazz Leader

Paint Valley is a herd I'd like to see. I was studying Kaper cows one time and lots of them bred all kinds of interesting ways went over there.

I have been very stupid about this Poly thing. Until about 5 minutes ago I thought Poly was a cow family. I kept wondering, Who are these Poly's??? But finally I get it.
Knabe, were the Cal -Poly Shorthorn cows a uniform group?

How about this one, Jake's Lenox Leader? What does he throw?

it's almost as if the AAA goaded people into using those types of bulls in all breeds by using them too.

it was basically the end of all the breeds.

they never recovered.

The Cal-Poly cows were very uniform.  They still had a few left when I was there in 2004.  The university partnered with Lucy clover ranch (Don Cardy) on a bull from Frost Acres that the GA prefix.  Those were great cows and crossed well with dividend.  The 20k female was miss d Cumberland great grand-daughter to whr sonny.  This is the same Cumberland cow family on the bottom side of JPJ.  They also had the maids and a few other lines.  My first shorthorn was a poly Cumberland cow.  The c cisco bull was owned by Cy white out of New Mexico and was red with white hind legs and looked as if he had a little Maine in him.  I think the reason the poly cows were so uniform was AI was used in limited fashion and they bought a herd bull rarely and used him or a son for years thus leaving a large group of similar daughters.  The issue with the cows were the did not nic with lots of bulls and had eratic  birth weights.

Thats a bad picture of a bull that changed the ratty ayatollah crap faster than any bull before or since, and headed the breed towards some semblence of thickness.- Enticer had nearly as much influence as Dividend-and his blood is still very predominate roday. Lauer, loving, Byland, Waukaru, Brockmueller, and many others intensely linebred and or line breed descendents. Deertrial Awesome, was 1990 national Champ, Cicisco or C-pancho was a reserve nat Champ-both sired by him. Byland Goldwalk sold huge and bagain the GOLD name-which is still in alot of cattle today-and behind national champs DFS Gold, Armstrong Gold, and Last years National Champ from Canada-not to mentioned hundreds of cows and bulls. Deertrial Awesome was behind alot of cattle-He didnt breed great all the time-but sired one of the greatest combo-SHOW-COMERCIAL bulls in the breed-BYLAND DAZZLER-a heavily documented bull still in use-Some of his sons were K-Kim Dazzler-Reserve Nat Champ-and sire of the National champ Dazzler that went to Sullivans, and GB Daybreak Express-a really good thick low bW deal who is also still in use-and even has a club calf grandson called real deal.ARSULU Massive and Osage are very good commercial deals-as OBVIOUSLY are the many Waukaru bulls-all go back to him-its a cast of thousands HE remains a very important part of the breed-in alot of countries O0

And White Jazz. What sort of cow was his dam?
To me, it looks like this cow has a million different directions going on in her. I could easily be wrong, but XBAR, why would this bull not be a mongrel and Blue Moon be a mongrel?

If you search animals by the name Jake's there's a LOT of them. I wonder where all those bulls went.
