Blue Moon. I completely love this bull.
He has the 1019 cow twice...a great OCC pedigree.
6807 plus Leader 21!!! This just seems like the crossing of line bred strains that happen to be from different breeds...more predictable than the breeding on Proud Leader. I do not understand this animal to be a mongrel.

Picture from a post by Iowa.

Iowa, thank you for the photos and history.
Do you have any more pictures of Sultan progeny?
I'm revising my belief that JPJ on OCC cows is the way to go for grassy blue roans.
Now I think its something like Sultan on Mitchell or Homer daughters out of nice Shorthorn cows.
That would make them 3/4 Shorthorn.

Sultan on my own bull x Galloway daughters would make tanks, come to think of it. I can do that very inexpensively. Just beef out the DS carriers and save the clean ones.
This input has really helped me sort out some of the JPJ influence. Thanks for your help and thanks to SP for tolerating my questions.

And White Jazz. What sort of cow was his dam?
To me, it looks like this cow has a million different directions going on in her. I could easily be wrong, but XBAR, why would this bull not be a mongrel and Blue Moon be a mongrel?

Technically, at only 90% SH, JPJ himself is a mongrel--but I think much of the volitility associated with mongrels has been offset, to a certain extent, by the prepotency of the SH component in his pedigree.

The MS Tipper 937 cow is every bit as much Shorthorn as JPJ himself so if you consider JPJ to be SH, then so must you consider 937.

By these standards, I consider White Jazz to be a purebred and I believe his concentration of SH blood is stabilized at a high enough percentage to warrant his use.

Blue Moon, on the other hand, is a crossbred.  Even if the bottom side of his pedigree is stabilized enough to be considered purebred SH (which I think it is), his sire is an Angus and thus the concentration of Blue Moon's genetics are far too diluted to introduce him into a scenario where increased homozygosity is desired.

I agree with everything you said. The prepotency of whatever combo is behind JPJ is pretty impressive. I saw a graphic one time that showed the spectrum of gene expression from both parents in crossbred animals. That random sort can really concentrate particular genes from either parent. I think.. I'm sure no geneticist.
About Blue Moon... He is probably most useful as an outcross for the Ohlde Angus gene pool to introduce heyerozygosity into some pretty tight breeding. Using him on Shorthorns, even Leader derived animals, would probably never wash out the OCC in him, so you are right about things getting muddier and muddier. But on Emblazon cattle I think he would be the cats pajamas.

Welll, I have to take that back about muddier and muddier.
Ohlde has stacked Anchor and 1019 on the Angus side and he is making a clear path to stacking 5113 with Blue Moon x JPJ matings.  Or X Iowa's bull.
Looks like maternal line breeding in the making to me. I think he's ignoring breed and fixing type.
About Anchor: http://www.ohldecattle.com/sires/anchor771a.html
Anchor sires unparalleled muscle, volume and fleshing ability. He will continue to be the best bull in the breed to change large framed, lighter muscled and structurally incorrect cattle. He even outperforms his sire, 6807, in this ability. Anchor daughters are moderate framed, very efficient females with great versatility in any breeding program. They have the ability to improve cow herd efficiency through reduced feed costs while maintaining production. The udder quality of the Anchor daughters is excellent. From a carcass standpoint, Anchor will add muscle and improve marbling and percent retail product.

Iowa would you please post a picture of your bull out of 5113?

HS INSTANT ENTICER
We used a bit of HS Instant Enticer by AI in the early 90's. The photo is a son of his. Brass Band was out of a cow that was a combination of Canadian and Australian beef bloodlines.

One thing I have noticed about the JPJ line cattle:  They bear little resemblance to Leader 21.

When I details a chance I will post some pictures of cows sired by a son of JPJ out of 5113 and out of JPJ daughters.  Good cow not great individual performance but, great producers.
