Most breeders know of the past popularity of Jake’s Proud Jazz-SH.

I have a couple of straws of Jake’s Proud Jazz left in my semen tank.  Considering using it on a nice Shorthorn Plus for a 2nd calf heifer.  I would want to retain a heifer calf if quality is good.
I am aware of his DS Carrier genetic standing.  I understand this is why the decrease in his semen being used.

However, could some of you help me in understanding of the issues and problems I might face if I were to use his semen and retain a heifer from the mating?

I believe first, that I have a 50% probability of the calf either being clean or a carrier of DS?

Subsequently, if the resulting mating would produce a heifer carrying the DS gene what issues do I face?

1.) Would I not be fine as long as I breed the subsecrant heifer to a “Clean for DS” bull?
2.) What other breeds is the DS Gene found besides Shorthorn?

Whom of you have bred to Jake’s Proud Jazz and “How have you gotten along”?  Especially, when keeping back replacement females out of him?

Thank you?

I have a JPJ cow that is DS. She’s a really good cow. Breed her clean and I don’t worry about it. There are others on here who have line bred JPJ and been fine. Others have had a wreck or two. Don’t breed a DS to a PHA cow is the big one to avoid in my opinion. I’ve been told by others who are smarter than I to not worry about DS.

Please help clarify:

Can you breed a DS carrier cow to a THC or PHAC bull without encountering genetic problems/issues/physical abdormalities?

Thank you,
