Last year I had a Jesse James heifer out of my big, winning Heat Wave x Meyer cow (She turned out phenomenal btw).  She was 75# at birth and grew, grew, grew.  I did assist, but then her mother was 1 month off the show circuit and fat.  Secondly, unless they just pop them out, when I busy with something else, I won't have one born unassisted.  I need to be there.  I check frequently.  Even camp out so I can check them through the night.  Now this year I have one due out of my PB Angus heifer who is a frame score 7+, great profile, had the width from hooks to pin and has a good belly on her but she doesn't have the hip and is narrow up front.  She'll be 23 months when she calves...First pic is the morning after my JJ heifer was born.  The second is the cow and calf in the hot Sept. Texas sun (calf is 5 months).

I guess I was a little surprised at the size and width of the calf on this heifer.  The heifer, despite being Heatwave derived (One & Only), is a medium sized, very angular and feminine female that does not carry much body width -- basically built like her dam.  The calf looks to have some potential.  He has a very short, wide head.  I had to look twice to make sure he did not have monkey mouth, but his jaws line up perfectly.
I got tricked by these same characteristics on the dam of the Jesse James calf I had to help with. Beautiful My Turn heifer, style and feminine as could be....turned out her pelvic size was extraordinarily small. I will say the Jesse James' do have some bone too them, but for some of us that is what makes em worth the little extra help sometimes....not saying its wrong to not want to need to help. Its just a personal preference I think.  <beer> Glad he has potential!

Figured might as well give an update on our Jesse James steer while this thread is bumped. Picture of him last August at a stocker feeder show, was extremely out weighed as he was a mid-late April calf...ended up 3rd overall steer. Sold him to a good family friend and next two pictures are of him a couple weeks back before and after a rough clip.
