Both are completely different bulls in my opinion. JPJ you would use on a big cow, and wanted to downsize her a tick. Salute the opposite of that.

if you are wanting to make steers- though- may as well mate them cross- and shoot for a great one- instead of an average purebred-- which will very likely be the result.

Proud Jazz is probably going to be your best bet for club calves out of the two because of the smaller frame and easy fleshing. Your going to have much higher birthweights with Salute on average than with Jakes Proud Jazz.

Before I would use any bull I would say evaluate what your females needs. as said previously both bulls are pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum. What is the breeding on your female? I am assuming since she is THC she mush be double stuff or heat seeker in their somewhere? What is the female?

We've had some awesome steers out of JPJ, one a Reserve Grand at our State Show and one that was Reserve at Tulsa. If I was wanting a shorty bull to sire clubby calves he would be my pic without a doubt. He does downsize and needs to be used on a bigger cow. Of the other bulls mentioned, Moose will flat sire some good ones too. I saw a him and a big group of calves sired by him several years ago at Mantua and they were great (big BW's), but flat put together. He was a really good muscled bull with an awesome lower quarter.

In my opinion go JPJ all the way! I have seen nothing but quality out of his calves. They arent always the best in the show ring, but they will cut your feed costs and maintain themselves. They typically dont reach the height a salute calf would, but thats why they are more productive. And honestly I think Salute was a popular hit when he came out just cause he was the new clubby looking bull from sullivans, however, I dont think i've ever seen a very good calf out of him. JMO <rock>

Well I tried something new this year and I guess I will have to see what happens. I used polar express on heatwave and a few th cows. I'm a little nervous because of the bw's but we shall see.

I saw Polar Express a few years ago. IMO he had some structure issues

We raised a Salute steer out of a simm cow a few years ago, and could never get finish on him. He was just a HUGE framed beast, and we finally sent him to slaughter when he was 1400 pounds, with almost no finish! Here is a pic of him at about a year, next to a yearling simm heifer.

sounds like this salute bull is alot like yellow jacket in terms of the kind of cattle he throws, imo

My question was if you had toothed or been there at birth not your friend? That's funny your friend said that because I have a good friend who's actually a judging team coach in Texas that had been around him some and actually liked the steer a lot and when I saw him he didn't have some of the typical hold over characteristics. I just think you shouldn't make statements such as you did without proof.

Most steers at Fort Worth that win are slower growing Aprils or May-June calves. We used to have a "tooth rule" in Texas until the early 90s. Any of us that grew up in that era became something of experts on when steers shucked their teeth. And it wasnt at 2 yrs old - almost all British breeds lose them significantly younger than 24 months - you would really be pushing your luck with anything older than a July calf. Exotics held them a little longer. Another little bit of trivia - a steer reaches their peak right about the time they spit their teeth. So, the Ch Shorti at FW may well have lost his teeth, but I would guess he was a March or April at the oldest - no more than a month or two older than his closest competition.
