I've got a coming 2 year old bull that has figured out how to pop his halter off if he rubs it the right way. We're taking him to Agribition next week, and the last thing I want to do is run around Regina after a big bull. We've tried running a zip tie through the knot, and that doesn't seem to do it. Any other ideas? Or should I just give JIT a head's up now so he knows who the bull visiting his stall every night belongs to.

We put a horse halter over the rope halter on a steer that we had that could get his halter off faster that you could get him tied. just run the lead through the side buckle, it does not interfear with the rope halter at all. We referred to it as his Hanable Lector mask.

I've seen a lot of people take a smaller size rope with a snap clip at the end and tie one side of it to the halter near their ear or a little lower and run the clip end under their jaw and clip it to the other side of the halter (or if you don't have a clip, just tie it to the other side).  That should keep the halter on them.  I've not had to do it, but I've seen it a lot at shows over the years and had some friends who have had to do it.  Seems to work just fine.

Ya. Just get a nose lead and tie one end to the halter, under the ears. (looks a little better if the unsightly knot is on the off show side IMO) then go under his chin and snap it to the halter on the other side. That way, you don't fool with knots and all that jazz when you really want him to fun around. And, makes ripping it off in a hurry that much easier on showday.

And, if you worry about him in tie outs, always remember to run the neck rope through the top of the halter. Keeps em a bit more "secure" at night. Won't let them rub it off.

Wow, I hate to even admit this, but we've never done anythign with the neck rope through the halter at tie outs. I imagine you just kind of slip the neck rope under the halter and then complete the loop and clip it onto the ring?

You got it. Simple as that and you won't go roaming around looking for your missing heifer. Can really save your butt. Heck, try it in the barn too. Would mean the calf can't loss its halter during the day at the show, at least.

Don't forget your neck ropes if you have it tight enough that will keep a bull hopefully tied until the morning.
I was sure happy to see my heifer calf bulling just the other day so we should be good for Agribition.

actually what has worked great for me is to take electrical tape or some other sticky tape, and just tape it round and round the halter until you get it where the halter cant slide past.  The downside is you have to take it all off to take the halter off.
