would you even have enough cows, to actually truly utilize three bulls like that??? I find myself in that situation all the time... Too many sires to choose from, not enough females--

I think I've got enough ram power to breed 1000 ewes...  And here I have 40.

I suppose it would be selfish of me to keep all three C.THE B.S.I did use four this year however plus a.i.and some embryo's.Sometimes in a breeding program you have to forego the economies of scale to get the pieces of the puzzle in place when and where you need them.

how many cows? 

I bred 40 of my ewes- plus 15 ewes from Northern IL and Iowa to the old ram, 3 sons of his, a grandson of his, and a slightly related partial outcross ram (6 total rams).  O and plus, I've got another son (maybe the biggest and best) of the old ram due back here anytime so I can use him this spring for falls...  I leased him out for this year to some people to help get their feet set on the right path. 

Jody, That is not the kind of info I like to give over the internet but if you come to visit I will show you everything but I would allow a fair amount of time.I will also say that between now and May 1st I have way too  many.
It sounds like you are thinking a lot like me with your sheep program and having success as well keep it up.Can I ask what kind of Backhoe you have?I still rememberthe first day in Animal Science class when we got to the sheep section.The professor who was a sheepman flashed a picture of a backhoe on the screen and told us that was the only equipment we needed to get in the sheep business.

I have always wanted a backhoe... but no we don't have one-- yet.. actually went above a beyond.. had a cat dozer for several years to tinker around with- redig ponds, push fence rows out, etc... just this fall we bought a track hoe.. now that's going to be neat...

I'll take you up on that offer someday...  Is that Watseka that I'm thinking? 

I tell you what, in May- we're planning a trip out to the Ohio sales- and are thinking about making a weekend of it.. Planning as of now on stopping by JTM to check out Brock's Complete bull- then at a sheep place north of Indy-- I'm guessing we could stop in at yours last on our way back to western il... 

To give you more thoughts... we have one purchased ewe- and about 10- 7,8,9, and 10 year old ewes...  The very oldest ewe- is only slightly related to anything else on the farm (has some grand daughters left), and one of the other 'older' ewes is slightly related to most everything else on the place...  Other than about 60% of the ewes I bred this fall being direct daughters, or granddaughters of the old buck (who's 7 coming on 8 now)- everything else is very related.  it's a pretty tight group-- that's not really ready for much of an out cross injection yet...

R>N>REED>>>  From the pictures I have seen of the bull- and the females you've shown on here-- It would be my pleasure to stop by for a visit...  Maybe, just maybe I'd find some shorthorns worth looking at in a grass pasture...

I sure wish I would have made the Sedalia sale this summer- had plans to stop by Sneed's while out there.. His breeding program and thoughts really interest me too.!

You would be most welcome Jody.I can also tell you it would be well worth the effort to see Rob's program as well.
