Plenty of water, and some full tank will do the trick. They should stay pretty full for the most part.

Do you mean drenching or pumping??

I would be more strict about what you do at houston than anything. Full tank and water, you can try alfalfa too!

25 years ago, we used to hold water. you probably do it today as well, maybe not as much as we used to.  we then put something the water, something like electrolytes, i can't quite remember, and then fill them up.  we used to get them in a routine to #1 and #2 so they didn't do that in the ring.

not sure i really like the over filled up look.  they look so un-functional to me now with all that weight.  something doesn't really translate when there is a huge blimp underneath animals now.

what is drenching

Drenching would be a squirt of water to the back of the throat, like you would do with a liquid wormer, as opposed to pumping which would actually be a hose down the throat.

in the 70's we used BEER.  right there at the county fair we would drench the steers with Budweiser...now, as an adult, when I smell Bud I think of get my steer drunk when I was 12.  O0

How exactly would you get your animal into a routine of #1 and #2ing? thanks.

Drenching and pumping are not allowed at the Texas majors. You need to train your heifers and steers to drink.

one way is keeping them laid down for a while, taking them to a spot until they go and then lay them down again.

remember, when you get up in the morning, you gotta go?

another way, is to get them used to if you let them stand for a bit they will go.  then, when you are practicing showing them, you keep them moving so they can't really get it all out from the inside.  if they know they will get a spot of time to go, you can get them to do it.  getting up and moving around stimulates the bowel.
