I will try to attach a  couple pics of my daughters(ages 5 and 7) with their steers.  Their goal this year was to hit the show ring without help from Dad and they were successful.  Even though they did not win any ribbons they had a great time with the cattle.  The white shorthorn weighed 1430 and the red was 1200.

If they made it to the ring without Dad then they have a leg up on a lot of 18 year old kids.  (clapping)  Kudos on raising kids and cattle the right way  <rock>

It is ironic, my kids are too young for 4-H so they show in the open jackpot classes.  It is hard when you have kids that are keen and ready to get out and start showing to tell then sorry you are too young.  My youngest showed her first steer at the fair when she was 3.

Cool pics there.  Those kids must put a lot of time in and you too.  My daughter can only show at open shows around here as well.  Most of the locals think that calves just can't be handled by younger kids around here, mostly because they just don't work on them much.

My Daughter placed this steer at our county show and won the JR showmanship buckle at age 10... I think the 12 year old rule is a little steep.  The childs parents can make the choice at what age their kid can show and 4-H allows for 9 year olds to show...

YES OUR COUNTY IS SLICK AS IS OUR STATE FAIR ;)

Our county and state allows for younger than 9 to show in the county, and district fairs.  They also allow in the jackpot shows.  Which I think is a great idea if the kids are interested at that age.  But the calf needs to be super calm and gentle.  I don't want to see anyone get hurt in the show ring.  We didn't start our daughter out until 8 on cattle, because she was a bit timid around animals.  However, we started our son out at 6 because he loves animals.  However, he doesn't have the attention span to stay interested in working with the cattle for too long during the day......  Hopefully he will grow out of some of that.

We do spend a lot of time with the cattle, the girls and I start in November for a mid-July show.  By show time the steers will follow the girls around like dogs.

Congradulations. It's not about winning if you ask me it's about working hard and doing your best and being proud of what you accomplished, yeah its nice to win but winning isn't all of it, its the work you put into the cattle that counts. I agree parents should be the ones who decided when there child is old enough/ ready to show, around here kids have to been in clover kids which is k-3rd grade and they have to show bucket bottle calves. My dad didn't let me lead my cattle around at the fair and up to the ring until this year which i am 14 just because of safety reasons so having young kids lead around a calf is pertty cool to see. I like how alot of kids including myself put in a lot of effort into there show cattle and love doing it.

I agree that winning is not everything.  I am trying to teach the girls to breed functional cattle and use the shows to promote your breeding program and not have the showring dictate how you breed cattle.  We also enjoy spending the time together and with the cattle.  In our area the fair board is very happy to see the young ones starting to participate and has never said to anyone that they are too young.  It is up to the parents to decide if it is safe for the kids to show.

Here is my 8 year old with his heifer.  He will show her for the first time next week.  He has worked very hard with his two calves.  From a bottle to feed.  She is a december 2010.
