I was looking for a few opinions on this show heifer from last season.  She is out a purebred simmental herd bull and a shorthorn cross dam.

It's always amazed me at how people can take shorthorn crosses, and breed them back to a black purebred... and get blue roans...  I have purebred shorthorns, and black cows.. and can't get a "true" blue for my life, let alone a heifer,  until this year...  and the only heifer I got.... has a twin brother!

Her dam is actually a blue roan cow who has had three of her four calves all turn out blue.  Lucky genes I guess.

I know of a cow that smokes the odds...  Double Stuff x WMW blue roan, but not really a blue roan.. she's got some color on the head and underline, and 4 socks..  think maybe even a white switch.  Anyways, bred her two years in a row to black bulls... the first a maine, the second a sim...  guess both bulls were hetro black, cuz both years that cow cranked out red roan heifer calves...  I'm guessing she bred on the roan, and since both bulls were red carriers, they bred on the red...  any other explanations?
