Just got our feeder calves about a week ago and everything is going pretty good.  We have an oustanding little breeding heifer that we are hoping is going to make a good cow.  She is a simple math out of a friction cow.  She has really good thick body hair but the hair on her legs is real thin and short.  We typically use the heck out of a rice root brush, the roto brush and when they have hair like this we apply maine and tail conditioner to their legs.  My question is, is there a better product to put on their legs to try and get some volume. We have about a month before the first open show and about 7 -8 weeks till our county fair.  Thanks for the help!

It's wierd over he whole body she has really nice hair that just pops and then you get to her legs and it is just real fine hair that wants to lay down.  I know we have only been working the hair a few days but didn't know if any products such as a conditiioner or something would help.  We usually have the girls do 100 brush strokes a day on each leg with the rice root brush so hopefully we can get her hair to do something.  Thanks!

give it some time. keep conditioning and brushing. i prefer to brush legs when they are wet so that when they dry, the leg hair is somewhat popped.

sounds like the hair on a friction steer i showed once. he had softer, finer leg hair that never really seemed to pop well. however, it pulled well with glue when he was fit.

There is a product called Olive Oil for ethnic hair. It is great for stiff short hair. It really helps relax that hair. They make a "pudding" if you apply it right before you roto brush it can be left in and is not harsh at all on the hair. Give it try. They sell it at Walmart.

Condition and keep wearing that brush out on her legs...if you are trying to get the hair to stay popped you have to realize that it takes a LOT of leg hair and right conditions for it to just stand up...typically something along the lines of a cooler...I have a heifer with TONS of leg hair, but to just walk up and see her you wouldnt think because it lays down unless I have just worked it...but it works up very nicely even with just a little zoom bloom at the blow and go shows...but if you are trying to train the hair to stand up it is imperative that the leg be damp while your brushing...brushing dry hair is great for stimulating the skin and follicles, but dry hair does not get far in training
