What's your experience with these calves? This is the 2nd year in a row that my daughter has bought one. Mainly because they've been relatively in-expensive. Both times, they looked just ok when we went to pick them up, but as we go, they just keep getting better and better. The one she had last year wound up being the #6 overall crossbred steer at our state show. This one doesn't quite have the look that the last one did at this time last year, but he's not far off. Do we account this to just having good luck with his calves, or what? Also, why aren't there more people using him?

Just curious.

From what I have heard he sires some really nice calves, but some of them are just complete idiots that never get to the point to were they can be shown.

I think you'd be surprised at how much use he is getting. The brockle face heifer is for sale and btw she is a puppy dog.

I forgot about that. I have heard that too. My daughter's steer last year wasn't a COMPLETE idiot, but he definitely wanted to be in control. This guy is pretty calm. Both steers that she's shown, from the shoulders forward would be where you'd want to change them.

Just an observation: I think some times when bulls first come out they end up with a bad rap due to the cows they get bred to, guys will use them but not on their better cows, and since the cows plays a big part in the calf they get a bad rap. On the other hand, some bulls throw great calves out of those average cows and take off. I think allot of a bulls success is determined by that first calf crop, some get the breaks, some do not, and others are the real deal, breaks or no breaks. i wont go into who is promoting and that lot that should be a totally different subject.

I got a Leroy Brown steer 2 years ago. Very nice steer, got him home and he was straight mean. I honestly thought we were going to have to shoot him. I couldnt go in a stall or pen to even feed him. He was horrible we everntually calmed him down to where we could put a halter on him and tie him up. After that he kicked like crazy. He did this up until the month before our last show! He then eventually stopped all the nonsense. needless to say, many broken bones came along with this steer, But for some reason he was one of my favorites of all time!

I bet there's been a lot more Leroy Brown steers sold than folks realize, they just weren't called Leroy Browns.  I imagine they went out the front gate with the term "heatwave" mentioned somewhere during the sale.  Geee.... just a guess.  I'm not saying that actually happens.  Purely hypothetical.... (lol)

Oh, and for those of yall who don't know pjkjr4, the fella who started this thread..... the leroy brown they showed last year was one bad hombre.  He was an awesome steer, there are probably more than just a few state fairs he could've won if he'd been anywhere but Oklahoma last March.  He really was that good.  That steer whipped us in class at OYE, and it was well deserved.  A man sure doesn't mind standing behind one that good in class, for sure.  Really good calf, that was really well presented, and his daughter did a great job showing him.

Well thank you Jerrod. You're far too kind. Like I said, when we bought him, I thought he was "just another steer". The guy I bought him from told me to take him home, feed him right, and good things could happen. He was right!!

If you still have my phone number, call me when you guys make it to Stilly on Saturday. It's free beer day at my tailgate!!

My 2 cents on Leroy Brown, I liked him well enough to use him last year but he was a bit inconsitant for me, He will certainly make them stout enough but he follows the cow in terms of front end and hip. I have a few cows I used him on again. Here is an april steer out of one of my chars.
