I bought a Semen Tank and AI Kit from a relative, it had an UNOPENED bag of Easy Breed CIDRS in it with a Exp. Date of November 2009. My ABS Dealer said that they would probably be fine to use since they hadn't been opened. What has been everyones experience and would they be OK to use? Or should I say Effective? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I asked that question when I went to AI school in College Station Texas this past May as I had some expired CIDRS. The Vet that was teaching the class on synchronizing estrus said that CIDRS do not expire and said he would use them even if they showed 5 or 6 years expired cause the drugs will still work as good, so I used my expired ones this past month and the cows came into heat just fine and mine were expired since January 2010 and the bag had been opened also for a couple years. They said they also like to resuse there CIDRS 1 time, so they use CIDRS 2 times before they throw them away and said they have never had any problems, cuts the cost in half the way I see it.

So to reuse a cidr how do you clean them up to implant them into another cow? Is it ok to just wash them with warm wateror do they need to be sterilized?

My AI guru said the best way to sterilize is with an autoclave. Which totally makes sense. They're pricey but he has access to one at a junior college. We're thinking about purchasing one for ourselves. For our purposes to AIing 200 hd, the autoclave would pay for itself in a year.

A 12 dollar bottle of Nolvasan will do the same thing but will pay for its self with only 3 head. I use a double pail rinse, one pail has water and nolvasan in it, the next has just clean water an the next is empty. Pulled 60 CIDRs this morning and it took only about 15 minutes to wash the CIDRs up. Make sure to dry them in the sun, we put them on the deck for a few hours and store in a cardboard box or some container that is not air tight, If there is moisture on them they will mold and stink.

This is the same way I sterilize them to reuse, works quick and inexpensive. Yes make sure you dry them good before you store them, all day in the sun usually works.

you want to make sure they are dry however if i remember right you dont want to leave them in the sun as it can deteriorate the progesterone in the CIDR

CIDRs will not expire in the sense that an expired one will not harm the cow, however, as with any drug, with time they begin to lose some of their efficacy. You generally dont have to worry about that though because most pharmaceutical companies are VERY conservative with expiration dates because they dont even want to risk any mishaps.  Also know that the progesterone is time released, most companies put enough progesterone in a CIDR that it will release progesterone for at least 14 days, so if your using a 7-Day protocal you should be able to get 2 uses out of 1 CIDR.
I rinse mine in a bucket of Novalsan/Water and then rinse in clean water upon removal.  I also follow the same process prior to putting them back in.  You do want to be careful not to store CIDRs wet, I typically use a paper towel and let them air dry before storage.  As with any hormone progesterone can be light sensitive so leaving them in the sun is probably not the best idea.  I like to store mine in a dark, dry, cool place.

Thanks for the input, I've been away for a few days and haven't been able to reply. I went ahead and used the CIDR's I had, I was hoping for the replies you all gave. This is all new to me, so I will be asking you all for more input along the way. Thanks for your help.
