You have to admire the fertility of Lot 12, calving at 14 months and then being able to breed back to move up a month. She will be having her second calf at 23 months! <beer>

Are you sure she HAD her first calf at 14 months?  I've never ever ever seen a heifer in heat under 6 1/2 months!!  The earliest we've ever seen one calve is 18 months.

Kinda buried! ;D
They must of thought quite a bit of the calf and momma to put him in their sale.  Deffinitely a different type of performance it would be interesting to see if the cow can hold up and calve every year for the next several years.

No mistake RankerCattleCo  look it up shorthorn.org

I don't know what I think about that.. Not really a trait I want in my cowherd-- Early Sexual maturity is one thing...  but no juvenile stage of life is another... I'd rather not have my baby calves getting bred by the old bull every year...

Thanks for all the comments, messages, and for starting the thread.  We have been busy getting ready and didn't realize that you had put it up Okotoks, much appreciated.  Just wanted to let you all know, we have the entire catalog in pictures and videos up on the website now.  Just got the rest of the heifers videos up today.  Thanks again for the interest and if I can answer any questions, let me know.

Scott,

The cattle look really good!  Love the bulls out of 23G daughters and the lot 13 bull looks to be very interesting.

Good luck!!

Thanks Joe, the unfortunate part for us was that we let go of a lot of 23g females as bred heifers. When you look through the catalog, it seems those daughters just seem to do their jobs and stamp the right kind of commercially acceptable cattle. You mentioned Lot 13, he maybe the best of the Double Duty line to date. We thought that about his sire 7155, but I think this calf probably brings another level of muscularity and dimension, as well birth weight and performance to go with. I think he will get some heavy use here by ai.

By the way, your new bull looks to be a good one. I didn't realize Shadybrook had that cow, that should be an interesting combo. Keep me posted.

Chandler, the heifers averaged $1250 or around there a year ago. We have had a lot of interest and not to take anything away from last years group, but this is as good of a set heifers as we have ever let go. I am really not sure there is a weak one in the group. As for what they will bring, I don't really know with the current strength of the replacement heifer market I am hoping they will be worth maybe $1500. Who knows though. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Good luck with the sale -- I'm sure you'll do well.  You're right about the 23G daughters -- he may very well be one of the best breeding bulls that no one ever saw.  He was one of the most consistent breeding bulls we ever used and the daughters were just great mothers.  Biggest mistake we ever made was not collecting him before sending him to Tribbett's -- I'd us him today without hesitation.  Funny when you think about the herds he was used in -- very different environments, different goals and yet he worked for everyone.  That's what a bull should do.

Thanks for the comments on our new Patent son -- we're really excited to get him and feel like we'll stack a lot of maternal power behind him.  I'll keep you posted as he comes along.

Few questions Scott-

1) what happened to the heifer videos on your website?

2) in a "cowboy auction" what happens when say there are 3 bidders that stay in at 1250, but when 1300 is anounced, all three go out?

3) what will be the price increments for the heifer bidding?

Chandler, thank you for calling the website videos to my attention. We added a link to the ultrasound information for the spring bulls and accidentally left out the last update on the heifers. It should be back up and running this morning. In case it is not, you can view all the videos at www.YouTube.com/lovingfarms.

In case of a tie of bidders, we will back up to the last bid and go forward by $50 and if that doesn't work maybe by 25. The heifers will be bid off in $100 increments. I know we had a few ties last year, but this sale is so low key that it worked out just fine. Hope this answers your questions and if you need anything else, let me know.

Sounds like the sale went well.  Bulls averaged $4300 with a top of $11000.  I don't know what the heifers averaged for sure but it had to be close to  $2000.

Lot 13.  I wasn't there just what I was told.  I wished i would have been able to go but had to much going on at home to get away.  I have a few of the heifers but that is it.

Lot 13 sold for 12,500 to Merle Welch in MO. Yep, the same Merle Welch of Green Ridge. He is still running around it sounds like. He bought 2 bulls I think.

Headed back from the sale now.  Lot 13 high bull brought $12500. High selling heifer lot 27 brought $2600.  I was able to pick up 5 heifers- lots 30, 35,  38, 39, and 40.

Merle also bought the lot 19 bull that sold in the 4 spot for $5300.
