My question is, what do you guys feed to get that extra fat cover on your shows steers. Are there any alternatives to name brand top dress supplements

Do a search on Stabilized Rice Bran.
We have used it for years, it lays down a nice smooth layer of fat, covers those twelfth rib, and is easy to feed.

We have used small amounts of corn oil in the past. You drench a bit each time you feed depending on their weight, and it puts a smooth cover on as well as healthy skin and hair. Some people don't like doing this, and it is a bit easier to just feed rice bran! I personally do both. Also, if you can't find corn oil, use canola oil from Walmart or your grocery store. Goodluck!

Corn oil is our go to.  We just pour it on the feed and mix it in by hand - never had any problems with 'em eating it.  You need to start slow (like maybe 1/4 cup per feeding) and work up to a full cup per feeding.  Have tried lots of other stuff - fast fat, golden flo, potatoes... they all work, but for cheap and easy, corn oil's hard to beat.

i would have to agree with the people recommending corn oil.  It's inexpensive and easy to feed.  I've used it on show horse.  Numerous World Champion Halter horses.  Used to get the box of 2 -2.5 liter bottles at Sam's and they came with a pump.  2 pumps per feeding.  How simple is that?  Great skin and hair, too.
