Lutalyse failed- anyone else have a similar story?

Last night we got a phone call from my brother-in-law, who just happened to be driving past the pasture where we have our bred heifers and 3 cows with no calf. He had noticed a grey creature walking among them and was sure that it was a wolf so he went to check it out. Turned out to be a strapping grey bull calf from one of the cows. She was open last fall when we preg checked her but we really liked her so we kept her and gave her another chance. She has had 3 really nice calves and the only reason why she was open is because she only had one shot with the bull in the spring. Well, we brought her home and the only pen she could go in was the one where we were keeping the bull, so in January we gave her a shot of Lutalyse. She had been with the bull for 4 weeks. She was put in a pen with just cows and we left it at that. She was over weight this spring and we were concerned that she would still be open because we hadn't seen her cycle and we figured she was probably just too fat. She went with the heifers to the pasture this spring and we check them once a week. We looked on Sunday, everything looked normal, so we left but apparently we should have chased her up, because she calved on Tuesday. I have to say its an impressive calf, just born at completely the wrong time for us! Was wondering if anyone else had a story similar to this? My mother recalls when they were still in Europe a holstein heifer got bred way to early, they Lutalysed and she calved at 17 months of age.

Somehow or another, we had a first calf heifer breed back last fall within about 21 days of calving.  We had run out of space and had a bull in with our girls for about 3 weeks right after calving.  We never knew he bred her, so we AI'd her in November after she calved in September.  That embryo survived a CIDR, a shot of lutalyse, + 2 shots of GnRH, + actually getting AI'd.

We had a similar situation recently. The bull jumped in with the heifers. I didn't see him breed anything but I lutalysed the heifers just to be safe. One of the heifers ended up with a baby calf 9 months later. She had it alright though so it wasn't so bad.. that's the bull she was going to be bred to anyway! Just had her first calf a little young! I still don't know why the lutalyse didn't work though!

how soon after the copulation did u all give the injection of lutalyse?

If it was only @ 10 days or less after breeding then the lutalyse will not work. Always wait around 14 to 18 days after the last chance they were bred to lutalyse.

Yep, couple years back had some bull problems and had a group calving way later than wanted. Sold most of them, kept back five of the best and aborted them, had 2 shots of Estrumate and a bottle of Lute.
The 2 that got Estrumate aborted, the lute ones - calved on pasture. One took a CIDR and all the shots - my AI guy stuck his arm in looks at me and say this ones in calf!!  She calved about 3 weeks later.  I know estrumate is a little more money but I've sworn off lute, even for sync program it doesn't give as good of results.

We use Lut/estramate and a shot of Dex if we to abort an unwanted calf.

how late is "too late" to lute a hfr in every1's opinion? 3 months?

Several years ago we purchased a show heifer from some people, in which was just turned in with a bull for a month. They did not see her breed, and during the times we had her, we never caught her in heat...  We decided to Lut her to get her to cycle., still not heat.. re lut her-- still no heat...  just turned her in with a bull and said he'll get her...  few months later, she calved- 102 lb bull calf...  She was only 18 months old at calving...

turned into our best cow after that...

Last fall, I had a ram lamb kept jumping in with the ewe lambs.  Went through and Lut AND Dex to them all, all 21.. TWO shots of each.  Think it was like 2cc LL and 3 cc Dex to each of them... Ended up 11 of the 21 still lambed, which was 9 of my best 10 yearling show ewe prospects...

I'm not very sold on the Lut...

It was about 4 weeks after breeding. I took this picture yesterday. He'll make a good calf even if he's born at completely the wrong time.

I have never used Lute to abort a pregnancy but I have used Lute for timed AI and I swear by Estrumate as I have had better preg rates with estrumate than lute.

we have used lut for timed AI as well... and even after the 2nd round of shots.. we had cows cycling for days to weeks later... just not consistant in my book.... but it's still about the best option we have available...
