Im wondering what bulls would work on some clubby cows to produce some replacements that will be a little more practical yet still produce a good show steer.  Im not sure what bulls would make good foundation type cows for making show steers.  I was looking at Style, Primo, Firewater, Steel force, Yardley High Regard, Uprising, and his son Revival.  I shipped a couple of my poorer cows last year and bought a purebred simmental heifer, I would like to phase out a few cows and keep back a couple heifers from my 3 best cows.  One is a Maine Shorthorn cross by shiver, the other 2 are both by Dakota Gold one out of an Ali/Meyer cow and the other by an All About You cow.  I know that I need to improve milk, structure, and temperament.  Thanks in advance for any advice.  It is appreciated.

There are so many really good options available.  I think you're headed in the right direction, I think the Angus guys probably know what works best on the Angus cows.  Charlo, Resource, Pokerface, Insight, Northern Improvement, Bismark to name a few would probably make better mother cows that the ones used to produce "show heifers" and a lot of them will have decent dispositions.  I would also lobby for Shorthorn in this instance as they make great mothers, have decent milk and have great attitudes.  The bonus is even the clean ones seem to throw hair.

As far as Shorthorns go I honestly don't know enough about the breed or bloodlines to know what bulls would be good options.  I'm assuming that a lot of the ones that are built like clubbies would not be a good choice.  Also are there any simmentals that you think would work.

I really like our Simmental’s as mothers. Our Uno Mas’s have done great. They come small grow reasonably well and make great mothers with good milk and excellent udder and teat structures. Sexed semen is cheap and available. This year we are breeding some more Hammertime, they’re pretty neat. Griswold has a ton of great Simmis, they’re great folks and will help you. Broker on anything with a good disposition is pretty good, but he’s expensive. The broker cows flat work if they aren’t crazy. We’re also using some sexed Fully Loaded a full brother to Loaded Up. They’re good cattle too. Anything with Meyer in the pedigree makes good cows too, Maximus is arguably his best son. Combustible and Fat Butt make great cows too.
