A family I work with has a Heat Wave x Chill Factor x Angus heifer that is currently bred for a March calf.  Assuming all goes good there I am looking for some mating ideas.  She is pretty extended for a HW.  Prolly a little too extended as she is a little weak behind her shoulders and through her forerib.  She is super sound.  Need a bull that would make ideally make marketable steers and heifers, but we have kicked around breeding her more maternal and crossing our fingers for heifers. She is registered Mainetainer if that means anything.  Bulls we've thought about so far include: Irish Whiskey, Dr Who, yellow jacket, and stockman 365.  Here are a couple pics of her.

I like the idea of Ali. I would also consider an Ali son. Has anyone tried Mercedes Benz ? Also like the looks of Lautner's Lotta Body, a bull that no one seems to know much about. JMO

We talked about Ali, but I'm afraid he will put too much extension in the calves and they will look piecey is my only concern.  The heifer herself is really extended and is plenty big.  weighed 1340 at aksarben and wasn't really that fat yet.

You ever questioned to mix her up with a fault free shorthorn?

If so, this guy probably would work. His only problem is that he is not powerful (height wise) enough. He is only a frame 6, but now a hole in him.

how about one of the gvc bulls?  oklahoma storm?

i'd focus on a leveler made bull as the "weakness" behind her shoulders might just be because her front end has too much catching up to do and there's only one place for cattle like this to break and it's right behind the shoulders.

If you go maternal I would suggest In Dew Time. Homo blk, he will pull birthweight off of most anything and the daughters do a good job even as first calf heifers. Personally I have never liked my doctor who females. They never made it past their first calf here, we let someone else deal with their mediocraty. If you were looking for a clean bull that could go both ways I would say hairy bear might fit the bill.

I like the hairy bear Idea.    If you might intertain color.   Like something that is an alias X meyer bred bull.  Maternal and color.  You might try vanilla Ice.    I have seen a few.  all real hairy, correct on front end.  I dont know enough history to predict how they would milk, though.  All on the boxxy side.  That would help the break behind the shoulder.

Your heifer looks really good.  Maybe something like Chopper (Simi) for more maternal and look, with some breeding, but fairly affordable semen. This calf might be worth something too.

These are just some crazy thoughts.  I haven't check on their BW or Blood either.  I like your heifer and I think she will work on just about anything with a light BW.

As you can tell I like to explore away from the mainstream, but not too far either. ;)

Stu, curious, is that the white JPJ bull you posted pics of several months ago?  regardless, that's a good looking bull, ought to sire some good steers.

I would try a calving ease Angus,Red Angus or SH. Remember she is a HW sired 1st calf heifer. Some of the calves sired by some of the bulls suggested, may come "tough"!!

Dr. Who would be the WRONG  bull to fix the faults you described.

Anyone with any experience with Irish Whiskey please chime in.  Also thought about Who Made Who.

If you are concerned about PHA w/ Irish Whiskey... try Free Whiskey, which is a full sib.... we should have several calves by him.  I hear reports he makes them just like Irish Does.

Out of the bulls you listed. We had some luck with Yellow Jacket on Heatwave females, but they had some high birth weights, because of the female. I have a 3/4 maine cow that your heifer looks like a great deal and I had the same concerns. I had excellent luck with using KBC Taz. He's a 50% Maine so you can register the calf. He was about 80# when he was born and did constistantly well at the shows. He never did worse then 3rd in a class and ended up winning his division at our fair.
Good Luck picking one to use! It can be hard to pick one when there are so many choices out there. :)

I was also thinking HAIRY BEAR as he is clean and theres a good chance shes a carrier, and hes got alot of winners and you never hear any calving problems from him.

Have also kicked around possibly Steel Force or Maximus.  I have once concern with Irish Whiskey is that i've seen some calves out of him that have been pretty bold shouldered.  Is that something you have to watch?  I'm not really concerned about his PHA carrier status.
