Hello, my brothers market steer has a tendency to go crazy and its becoming an issue. We have fair starting August 6,2012. We have tied up his head for hours, which he hates and throws a fit. We have tried the nose ring, which didn't help much. I have heard to use melatonin, but i am  getting mixed answers. Does anyone know how much to use and if it shows up in a drug test? He has been to a couple shows, which my brother got thrown around quite a bit.  Its our first year with steers so any thing helps.

I dont know if meletonin shows up in a drug test.  We have used it though, and thought that it did help, but there is also calf calm, which is all natural, but depending on the fair may be legal and may not be.

I honestly don't know that melatonin is a banned substance. It is  naturally occurring. I know sullivan's has there new peace pellets, I don't have any experience with the product but may be worth a shot.

I know in our state they do not test for melatonin nor is it a banned substance. For a fat steer I would start by giving him 100 mg's (33 - 3 mg tablets) and see if it helps if it does not, I would try 130 mg's (40 3mg tablets). Try giving half in the morning half at night, we have doubled it on show days for the real edgy ones.

I have never heard of an animal being thrown out for Melatonin use even when drug tested.  Calf Calm or Ace would likely work better but may not be allowed depending on the regulations within the county.  Melatonin works well and the best is you can use it daily.  Like vc said start them on 100 mgs daily.  I would try doubling it one day before the show because in some cases it is too much and you have a tired animal in the ring that won't hold himself together properly.

Do not use Ace on cattle.  Not approved.  Especially at a show and even more so at a terminal show.  Drug residue and illegal drug residue at that.

Look for L tryptophan it is an amino acid so completely safe and legal. It comes in powder form and some vet supplies supply places carry it. Just top dress the feed with it daily. It is what causes us to be tired on thanksgiving because it is in turkey. It is also one if the ingredients found in calf calm and similer products.

Melatonin is all natural no worries about a drug test from it.  Stierwalt got us started using it back a couple years ago.  The key is you HAVE to get it in their system.  We start w/ 100 mg/ day 7 days before show in the feed.  Have went as high as 200 mg on show day.  Never had one get droopy like w/ tranqs.  Did have a heifer last year that it had a reverse effect on and she would get really jittery.  This is not a quick fix to a rank steer!  It will calm them down and make them easier to show.  If your calf is bad crazy, leave him home!  Not worth getting your brother, you or anyone else hurt.

Yep all natural.  Wasn't to crazy when my wife wanted to take it but after reading the label it is safe.
